Hindi alam ni Bea kung papaano ang dapat niyang gawing interpretasyon sa nakikita niya.
She just went out of Angelo’s office to ask the guy’s executive assistant kung saan pupuwedeng mag-order ng snacks because she was thinking of ordering some for her, Angelo, at pati kay Mrs. Reynes na rin. She knew the guy had an important meeting to attend and although hindi niya alam kung kumain na ito doon or hindi, she figured she should just make an order anyway.
Akala nga niya ay hindi pa tapos ang meeting nitong iyon kaya naman hindi niya inaasahan na makikita niya ang lalaki pagkabukas na pagkabukas niya ng pinto. And then of course, there’s the fact na hindi rin niya inaasahang makikita niyang nakapulot sa braso nito si Alexis.
She also didn’t expect the sudden strong feeling of wanting to extract Angelo away from Alexis’ clutch that arouse inside of her.
Buti na nga lang napigilan niya ang sarili niya bago pa man niya iyon magawa. She settled with meaningfully clearing her throat. Mukha namang nakahalata si Angelo dahil pasimple itong kumalas kay Alexis. Bea noticed the small pout that rose to Alexis’ lips when Angelo did.
“Bea!” Angelo exclaimed as though the past couple of seconds didn’t just pass by, na tila ba kabubukas lang ng pinto at kalalabas niya mula roon. “You two remember each other right?”
Bea simply nodded and smiled while Alexis smiled and waved lightly. Hindi na sinabi ni Bea na ang una niyang naalala about the woman was her back at that bar’s terrace nang naglalampungan ito at si Angelo.
It was a good thing though because the air was getting too awkward even without her saying that. She noticed that Alexis may actually like her as much as she does, which is not at all.
Buti na nga lang at may umagaw agad sa kanilang atensyon bago pa man kung ano ang mangyari.
“Bea!” came Elmo’s surprised but entirely pleasant tone, making all three of them turn to the source of the voice. Nakita nilang palapit sa direksyon nila si Elmo kasama ni Alden.
“Kuya naman,” dagdag ng lalaki sa nagbibirong tono bagaman saglit na saglit lang ang tinging ipinukol nito kay Angelo. “Magkasama lang tayo kanina, why didn’t you tell me na isinama mo dito si Bea?”
“You didn’t ask,” Angelo shrugged.
“I asked to come,” dagdag naman ni Bea. Somehow, especially with Alexis there, she wanted to make the record straight na idea niya ang pagsama doon.
“Showing interest in the family business huh?” nakangiting sagot ni Elmo. “That’s good, matutuwa si Lola Lory.”
For some reason, maybe not a reason entirely unknown, nagsalubong ang mga mata nina Bea at Angelo at this. After all, masasabi man kasi na medyo generic ang sinabi ni Elmo, it does carry some weight and heavy implications with regards to Bea’s relationship with Elmo and Angelo’s family. Napansin ni Bea na maging si Alden ay natigilan saglit, hindi nga lang niya alam kung ano ang nalalaman ng lalaki o gaano kalalim ang alam nito.
And it was the guy who recovered first.
“Speaking of the matriarch,” simula ni Alden, pre-empting the surfacing of another weird atmosphere in the group, and Bea couldn’t help but feel a surge of gratitude towards the guy lalo pa dahil tumingin na rin si Alexis sa kanya na nakataas ang kilay. “May bali-balita na aattend siya sa dinner next week, totoo?”
“Saan mo naman narinig ‘yan?” tanong ni Angelo just as Alexis exclaimed “Really?”
“Hindi ko ba nasabi sa’yo kahapon?” Elmo chuckled, looking none too apologetically. “Huh? I must have been distracted,” anito and Bea saw the twinkle in the guy’s eye. In her mind, nag-flash ulit ang eksena nang biglang magsalita si Elmo sa gilid ng pool habang naroon sila ni Angelo. “Anyway, nagpasabi kasi si Lola. She says she’ll be attending next week’s events.”
“Really, that’s a surprise!” Alexis exclaimed while Bea simply looked on.
Ayaw man niya ay hindi maiwasan ni Bea ang maramdamang out of place sa maliit na grupong iyon lalo pa dahil hindi niya makita kung ano ang surprising sa sinasabi ng mga itong pagdalo ni Lola Lory sa company events. After all, from what little she knew of the business from her father, alam niyang si Lola Lory pa rin and CEO and chairman of the board ng kompanya kahit pa ipinasa na niya sa panganay nitong anak na si Zoren, Elmo’s father, ang position bilang President ng kompanya.
“Well, it’s not like she’s attending the day events,” Elmo shrugged dismissively. “Sa dinner lang naman siya dadalo.”
“Why, what’s happening next week?” hindi mapigilan ni Bea na itanong. She does not feel too good not knowing, especially with her standing just there.
“You didn’t know?” Alexis asked with the air of a woman gloating for knowing something the others do not. “It’s Angelo’s birthday next week. His 26th!”
There were quite a few things that Bea didn’t like from that response.
Una, ang tono ng pagmamalaki sa boses ni Alexis nang sabihin nito ang tungkol doon, na tila ba ipinagdidiinan nito ang kawalan niya ng kaalaman sa nangyayari. Pangalawa, ang paghawak-hawak pa ng babae sa balikat at braso ni Angelo habang sinasabi nito iyon. At pangatlo, ang reaction ni Angelo na medyo nagblush pa nang hawakan siya ni Alexis sa braso.
Hindi niya sigurado kung sino sa dalawa ang gusto niyang gawing lumpo.
“The company holds an annual sports day event during Angelo’s birthday,” Alden supplied, making it the second time in that conversation alone na lihim na magpasalamat siya sa lalaki. “Tapos, dinner cum gathering sa gabi. We’re not really that sure though kung coincidence lang iyon o talagang sinadya ni Lola Lory na isabay iyon sa birthday nitong si Angelo.”
“Oh, you can bet good money na sinadya iyon ni Lola,” salo ni Elmo na napansin bi Bea na iba ang tingin sa kanya. Nothing serious though, just that the guy is looking at him in a sort of amused but understanding way. “But it’s a company event and since nag-eenjoy din naman ang mga empleyado, the tradition lives on. Plus, sabi ni daddy, it’s a good timing to interact with the investors and the other directors.”
“Why am I not surprised to hear Tito Zoren say that?” natatawa na naiiling na sagot ni Angelo as the others chuckled or made a light laugh. Once again, Bea didn’t like feeling and not knowing why.
“Oh, he’e specially looking forward to this event,” ani Elmo na ibinalik ang tingin kay Bea. What he said next though caused everyone else and not just him to turn to her and for Bea to suddenly feel her cheeks flare at the attention and insinuation.
“He says he’s looking forward to finally getting to meet you.”

“So, what do you think of the company so far?” bungad na tanong ni Elmo nang sila na lang dalawa ni Bea.
Their little group was just about to disband then, or at least Alden and Elmo was about to go on their own way since Alexis claims she still has something to talk to Angelo about, nang ipaalam ni Elmo siya kay Angelo. Ayon sa mas matangkad na lalaki, the two of them had something to talk about.
She and Elmo ended up walking to the building cafeteria.
But Bea’s pretty sure na hindi pangangamusta lang ang dahilan kung bakit siya biglang gustong kausapin ng lalaki, she’s not really sure what’s the other reason though, just that she has this feeling na may kinalaman ito kay Angelo.
Still she played along.
“It’s, well, it’s a lot bigger than I used to think,” natatawang sagot niya, remembering her thoughts on the company her father works for and her family had a small interest in.
“Sa una lang yan,” Elmo chuckled. “Masasanay ka din eventually. So, you think you’d like to work for the company?”
“Excuse me?” hindi mapigilang bulalas ni Bea. She wasn’t expecting that.
“Just asking,” kibit-balikat ni Elmo. “I’m pretty sure gugustuhin nina Dad at Lola na malamang gusto ring dito magtrabaho ng mapapangasawa ni Angelo, not to mention, your dad.”
Bea felt flustered with the sudden talk of the future.
“Let’s not get too ahead of ourselves,” she simply said. Hindi na niya idinagdag na malamang naman ay wala talagang kasalang magaganap sa pagitan nila ni Angelo lalo pa’t si Angelo ay kasalukuyang ‘busy’ kay Alexis.
But voiced out or not, something must have reflected on Bea’s face the moment those thoughts ran through her mind, o baka naman iyon lang talaga ang kanina pa gustong patunguhan ng lalaki, dahil nangiti lang ito.
“There’s nothing going on between Jek and Alexis,” anito sa isang malamyos na tono.
Sa gulat ay biglang napatingin si Bea sa lalaki. Hindi rin niya inaasahang biglang sasabihin iyon ng lalaki. Mayamaya ay natawa siya.
“I wasn’t asking,” aniya sa lalaki.
Elmo chuckled lightheartedly.
“You didn’t have to,” anito. “Besides, hindi ko naman sinabing tinanong mo eh. Sinasabi ko lang para alam mo.”
Napailing na lang ang babae sa tinuran nito. Umiwas na siya ng tingin sa lalaki lao pa dahil hindi naman niya alam kung ano pa ang puwede niyang isagot sa lalaki sa sinabi nitong iyon nang mapalingon ulit siya sa lalaki. Nagsalita kasi muli si Elmo.
“Wala kang dapat ipagselos.”
Hindi niya mapigilang mapabuntong-hininga.
“Believe me Elmo, hindi ako nagseselos,” matigas na diin niya.
