Chapter 7:
Silence filled the air as Nino drove Masami back to her apartment. It was relatively later that night, their talk having extended for far longer than Masami had expected.
But the silence in the air was nothing awkward. It’s more contemplative really, for Nino, and most especially for Masami. It actually fits, especially after the talk they just had.
“I still love you,” Nino had said. “All these years and all the while, I never forgot about you. I made the big wrong choice of allowing you to end the two of us in the past, I’m not going to make another one now by not fighting for a second chance.”
“So, uhm,” Nino started, breaking the silence as the two of them caught sight of her apartment building. “Thanks, for hearing me out, for coming with me tonight.”
Masami could only smile.
“And, I know that what I told you weighed quite a lot and that you might need quite some time to think about it but… well… the band is flying to Yokohama next Sunday for a PV shoot. It’s going to be a six o’clock flight. And,” he stopped as if choosing his words very carefully as he swallowed hard “i-if you come up with a decision, you’ll know where to find me.”
Masami’s eyes flew to Nino the moment she heard the phrase “flying to Yokohama” her heart suddenly feeling as though it is being squeezed, it was the very same feeling when Nino had told her before that he was flying to the States. It was for this reason that she saw that Nino wasn’t looking at her. In fact, it looked like Nino was trying his best not to look at her. He looked anxious, worried. And that wrenched her heart even more. She never liked seeing the guy in that state.
“Nino…” she started, although she wasn’t really sure what to say after that.
She felt like reaching out and touching the guy’s cheeks, to tell him something, anything! But she held her hand back. She knew that if she made any move, it would practically mean she’d made her decision, something she still has not.
Nino turned around quickly at her, his eyes betraying him by showing a glimpse of a hopeful look before it was wiped off again and he smiled at her sadly.
“Honestly, a small part of me hoped that you were going to say that I shouldn’t go,” he said, that sad smile still on his lips. “But we’ve done this already and I know you too much to know that it’s not going to be the case.”
Even Masami had to smile, sadly, at this.
“Anyway, not to add pressure on you but I will be waiting,” he told her cheekily, showing off confidence
he didn’t feel as he smiled at her and then winked.
Masami couldn’t help but smile too.
“You’re still the charmer, Ninomiya,” she said.
Nino chuckled. “Proud and you know it!”
-----
Masami was already smiling when she waved Nino away in his car but she realized soon enough that the smile and the light feeling was just short lived. By the time she had closed the apartment door behind her, she felt everything weigh down on her like an avalanche.
She couldn’t help but sigh as she leaned against the door.
She was never really the popular type. Of course she’d had a couple of suitors at the same time and stuff like that but she never, ever thought she’d have to face the tough problem of having to choose between two guys, both of whom meaning very much to her.
Some other women would think her situation is enviable but for Masami, there’s nothing enviable about it. Not when she can’t bear the thought of losing one or hurting the other.
She had been in the position for a good ten minutes when Masami finally realized that something was odd. For that length of time, Jun would have surely checked out why she hadn’t made any sort of noise yet but no Jun has come out, either from his bedroom or the kitchen.
Finally leaving her spot by the door, Masami started looking around as she called for her brother. It didn’t take her much time too to find out why her brother is conspicuously absent.
Placed prominently on the sofa is a huge teddy bear she had always loved, something he had bought her years ago with his first salary. Stuck to it was a letter.
Gone for a week. Sent to Nagoya for work. Can’t say no. Will call.
Masami could only sigh as she sat down next to the teddy. On the bright side, having the week alone (and no Jun hovering around) may just be what she needed to think things through.
On the downside, she actually fiercely needed a hug right about that time. And just as that entered her head, she pulled the teddy towards her for a hug.
-----
“Cheer up!” Yoko cheered as the guy stepped next to her as the two of them headed out of the school. “It’s Friday after all! Don’t you know that there’s an unwritten rule that no one should look so glum on Fridays?”
Masami looked up at the guy and smiled. It wasn’t really forced out or anything but Masami doesn’t quite feel it to her heart either.
“You have plans for the weekend then?” she asked her friend.
“Unfortunately,” Yoko sighed, prompting Masami to raise him an eyebrow, especially considering what he just told her moments ago. “Oh, it’s nothing really,” he immediately added, brightening up. “It’s just that I have to accompany my sister to go venue-hunting for her wedding reception. I already told her to contact a wedding planner but she insists on doing it all on her own. Makes me dreadful really, but hey! It’s the weekend!”
“Yeah, too bad…” Masami could only say in reply.
She couldn’t really tell it to the guy but she’s right in there with him dreading the approaching weekend.
She couldn’t also help but heave out a huge sigh the moment she crashed on the sofa in her apartment.
The whole week had been quite a mind-boggling week for her actually despite the fact that she literally was alone the whole week after her class. Jun was stuck in Nagoya, Nino didn’t and couldn’t show up due to his band’s appointments and Ryo had to work late because of their firm just landed a huge project, the very same reason Sho called them the previous weekend.
But for someone who’d been generally alone for the whole week, she hadn’t had the lack of conversations. Nino sent her numerous messages ranging from “Good morning!” to “I know I’m causing you a lot of confusion right now but I just want to say I love you…”, for Ryo’s part, the guy would always call, around the time he knows she’ll wake up, get a break, or go home, he’d send text messages too. But perhaps the most persistent would be Jun, who by Wednesday had said he’ll try to skip work and head home earlier. Only, Masami convinced him to finish his job first and that she’s perfectly fine. Jun decided to stay in Nagoya throughout the week eventually but obviously did not believe her spiel that she was fine.
For good reason too, because she really wasn’t.
For the whole duration of that week, Masami had been wracking her brains and straining her heart with every possible scenario and situation, and if truth be told, she’s still no closer to an answer to her dilemma as she was the week before.
Nino is her first love, that much she’s sure of. She fell for him during a time she was afraid to take the first step, to take the first plunge. He always had this ability to make her smile, to make her turn around and follow him, to make her eyes stick to him like it is glued to him. He was the first to make her feel so alive. He was why she believed in things such as destiny. Nino’s the first guy who had been able to make her heart beat rapidly and in turn, also the first (of, course, other than Jun) who can really make her worry. It was also Nino who was the first guy to be the reason for her tears.
As for Ryo, she fell for him when she thought she wasn’t going to fall in love again, when she didn’t even entertain the idea. She fell for him when she saw him smile. The guy makes her feel comfortable and safe. Most of the time, he knows exactly what to do or what to say, making her think that he has the ability to read her mind. He was the guy who made it easy for her to look forward more to the mornings rather than her dreams. It was Ryo, who, unknowingly, prompted and helped her forget Nino.
And for the week that passed, Masami would always ask herself before she closes her eyes for the night, Nino or Ryo?
-----
“You look like hell,” Jun stated a matter-of-factly as the guy worked his way through the kitchen.
Jun had arrived just hours ago actually but the guy had decided to make something for the two of them, especially since he declared that he wasn’t in the mood for on eat-out on a Sunday. Masami chose to hang around him like she always did when they were younger rather than stay in her room and wrack her mind. In a few hours, Nino’s flight to Yokohama is going to leave but she still had not been able to make up her mind.
“Thanks brother, a girl loves to hear those very words,” she told Jun dryly although there was a small smile on her lips. She liked that most about her brother actually, Jun never sugar-coats his criticisms to her. He always says it out, blunt and loud.
“Well, it is true,” Jun chuckled and shrugged. “You look like you haven’t had much rest over the past week. Want to talk about it?”
Masami had this weird, nagging feeling that her brother already actually knows her dilemma, or something about it. Still, she sighed.
“What do you do when you’re faced with two choices and you don’t know which one to choose?” she asked.
Her suspicion that Jun already has a gist was confirmed when he said rather too coldly and simplistically, “Toss a coin… Or better yet, not choice any at all!”
“You’re not helping,” she pouted.
Jun chuckled lightly as he turned around, that chuckle turning into a sigh when he saw her expression. And if she looked as well as she feels, Masami knew why, because she felt really lost then.
Jun approached her, swinging an arm over her shoulder when he finally did as he sighed yet again.
“I can’t believe I’m even saying this but, who do you love more between the two of them?” he asked.
Masami simply looked at him sadly, that pout still on her lips.
Jun looked contemplative for a while before he said “Okay, let’s change the question, who would you rather not lose?”
Masami shook her head. “I don’t know the answer to that either.”
Jun smiled lightly as his hand reached out to hit her lightly at the back of her head. “Well, you are going to have to decide. You can’t take both roads leading to two different paths. Personally, I’d rather you not take a pick. I mean, I’m here for you anyway. But you can’t stay on the fork forever, because either or both those roads are going to close sooner or later.”
Masami didn’t say a thing as she listened to Jun’s words. She simply laid her head against her brother’s shoulder.
“You may feel something for both those idiots but you can’t possibly feel the same for them both. For sure, one would weigh more than the other, you’re just not sure of it yet,” he continued. “I guess it boils down to this, if you were to assign these words, who of them would you be able to be happy for and happy with?”
Masami lifted her head and looked at her brother in surprise as her head spun at those words. And for some reason, she felt as though everything suddenly aligned.
“Hey!” she said after a while. “Since when did my older brother become a love guru?”
“Since my younger sister become too popular,” he chuckled before he added seriously “Whatever happens, know that I’m here for you.”
Masami smiled as she hugged the guy. “I know,” she said. “Jun, can I ask a favor,” she added in a sing-song tone as she pulled out of that hug. “Can you drive me somewhere?”
She saw Jun sigh before he rolled his eyes and said “I was afraid you’d ask” as he rolled his eyes. Masami couldn’t help but beam even as he whipped out his phone saying “We’d have to use Aiba’s though since I had to leave my car at the mechanic’s.”
-----
“Do you think she’d come?” Ohkura asked loudly as each of the members of the band readied themselves to board the plane.
“I don’t know,” Ohno shrugged as both men threw Nino a cautious look. Nino was by the glass wall showing the landing strip, the guy had been standing there since their group arrived.
“I’m not sure what’s going to happen when she does come,” Yasuda added.
“Wonder about what’s going to happen if she doesn’t,” Subaru interjected as the other two turned to look at Nino too.
The four had just heaved out varying sighs when Hina showed up. “Guy’s, we’re boarding in 10 minutes,” he called to the group.
-----
Nino turned to Hina hearing the guy’s announcement before he turned to his wrist watch as he nodded along with his group mates. His heart sank seeing that it really is almost 6.
He had just headed to the seat where his bag is and started fixing up things when his attention, well, all of theirs really, was caught someone calling his name.
Looking up, he felt his heart soar.
Masami is running towards their direction, Jun and Aiba following suit.

SUMMARY: Ryo shows proof of his apparent dislike for his Ryusei no Kizuna co-star...
“So which, exactly, part of all that explains your sudden declaration that you don’t like Kaname Jun-san?” Uchi asked with quite a confused expression as the screen turned blue, marking the end of the video footage recorded in that DVD his best friend made them watch.
The two of them, along with Ohkura, Yasuda and Subaru, were at the Kanjani8 greenroom then, Uchi having dropped by for a quick visit to seven of the closest people in his life. Of course, the others weren’t there yet since Yoko and Hina both were still on their way there from their radio show and Maruyama was finishing up a shoot. Honestly, watching that video, the video recording of the cast of Ryusei no Kizuna which included Ryo, was not in their plans. Well, considering that they did record it, they were planning to see it at some point in time but not at that moment. But then Ryo suddenly blurted out his dislike of his tall and good-looking co-star prompting the others to question his reasons. Ryo played the video as an explanation.
“Yeah,” Ohkura nodded, being the only other person, other than Ryo and Uchi, in there who’s eyes were still on the screen. Subaru had long since abandoned the show and started perusing a, uhm, magazine (let’s just say magazine) and simply taking a peak at the screen every now while Yasuda dived into his bag to search for, and subsequently play, his DS. “All I saw was you and Ninomiya-kun sucking so badly at that seesaw thing and you being bad in Hyper Hockey.”
The look Ryo gave Ohkura was a cross between a growl and a pout as he snatched away the remote that Ohkura had just reached for.
“You weren’t looking closely!” he told them before rewinding the tape to a certain part of their whole guesting at Tokyo Friend Park, particularly during Kaname Jun and Toda Erika’s turn in Hyper Hockey.
“You don’t like him because he scored two consecutive times in that game?” Uchi asked incredulously. “Have you been hanging out that much with Tegoshi-kun that his over-competitiveness rubbed off on you?”
“No!” Ryo cried. “Well, during work yes but that’s not the point!”
“So what is?” Ohkura asked.
Ryo rolled his eyes. “I don’t like him because he’s arrogant.”
“You mean, more arrogant than you?” Uchi grinned cheekily. Now, if it had been anyone else who said that, it would have immediately resulted to a death glare from Ryo but since he is Uchi, well, all he had was an almost death glare.
“Did you even notice how he looked at Erika-chan after those two shots?” Ryo cried exasperatedly.
“He looked like he was trying to emphasize that success to Erika-chan,” Yasuda suddenly said without even looking up from his DS, his mouth slightly in a pout as he tried to concentrate in his game and talk with his friends both at the same time.
“I wonder how Hina really got that lucky,” Subaru said out of the blue. “Erika-chan is really pretty.”
“Oi!” Ryo reprimanded, hitting Subaru with his magazine with a throw pillow. “Don’t talk about Erika-chan while reading your magazines!”
“What?” Subaru simply exclaimed, looking up from the magazine with a rather innocent smile.
“Maybe he has a crush on Erika-chan,” Yasuda supplied with a shrug.
Ryo sighed and ended up shaking his head as he slumped back to the sofa, having had no success in explaining his statement of dislike of the guy.
“Yasu-kun might be right,” Ohkura said.
“Then I really, really don’t like him,” Ryo growled in a voice loud enough for only Ohkura and Uchi to hear.
“Suit yourself,” Ohkura shrugged. Before either Ryo or Uchi could say anything, the door opened, or might as well have been blasted open, as an extremely loud trio of voices came in discussing the unexpected success of their 47 DVD in the Oricon charts. Maruyama, Hina, and Yoko had just entered the greenroom (and reacting to Uchi’s presence there as though--which it really is--a regular occurrence).
As the others joined in to get the latest update on their DVD release, Uchi leaned closer to Ryo and asked in a rather annoying expression, for Ryo at least, “You dislike him liking Toda Erika-chan because she’s Hina’s girlfriend or you dislike him liking Toda Erika-chan because you’re finding yourself liking Toda Erika-chan too?”
“What?!” Ryo gasped, his face suddenly flushing red. “No!”
“Uh-huh!” Uchi nodded doubtfully before giving Ryo a mischievous grin.
Before Ryo could do more than just gape at his best friend, Uchi had pushed himself to a stand and headed towards the group at the table.
“I heard 47 is leading the Oricon album charts!” Hina declared, causing everyone to shout for joy. Everyone but Ryo that is, he could only smile.
He’s extremely happy of course, one of his groups achieving such a feat, particularly the one that almost everyone predicted to be destined to lesser fame and success. But he couldn’t find himself cheering as much as the others, what with Uchi’s last words to him still ringing in his head.
He can’t be interested that way in Erika. Right?
-----THE END-----
