The icy wind blew across the porch, not strong enough to topple anything, but enough to make its presence felt as it quietly whisked away all the warmth from the area.
Satoshi was not complaining, even though Daisuke was using him as a windbreak. Actually, he was glad for the wind. It was blowing away the clouds that had threatened to obscure their view of the fireworks.
“Hey, Satoshi?” Daisuke spoke. Satoshi looked at him. He didn’t smile, but his eyes became softer.
“Yes?”
“Have you decided on your New Year’s resolutions?” Daisuke asked.
Satoshi frowned thoughtfully. “I have one, but I’m not yet certain about it yet.”
“Oh.” There was silence between them again. The clock tolled at fifteen minutes to midnight.
“What is yours?” Satoshi asked suddenly.
Daisuke jumped. “Eh? Oh, I’ve decided to not worry about things this year!”
Satoshi raised an eyebrow as he tried to imagine Daisuke not worrying. He failed. “Why?”
“Well, Takashi was telling me I worry too much a couple of days ago. And then the Harada twins said the same thing yesterday.” Daisuke scratched his head embarrassedly. “I guess I do tend to over think things.”
“I don’t think you worry too much.” Satoshi said automatically, and then had to turn away. Truthfully, Daisuke’s constant worrying about his eating habits and general state of being could be annoying, but…
It made him feel happy.
“You don’t?” Daisuke looked surprised and pleased at once.
“No. You care about people. Don’t try to change that.” Satoshi looked back at Daisuke.
For some reason, this caused Daisuke to blush and mutter something under his breath.
A loud screech prevented him from pressing the matter further, and Satoshi barely caught a glance of the first firework of the night arching into the sky before it exploded.
He let the matter drop then, just enjoying watching the fireworks and more importantly Daisuke’s contented look.
It didn’t seem long at all before the clock began tolling, once, twice, thrice-the final and largest firework was lit-four strikes, five, six, seven-they could see it now, a dot of light leaving a trail of white smoke and sparks-eight, nine, ten, eleven…
The sky filled with brilliant white light which shattered into sheets of falling embers, blazing a brilliant red as they fell; and the clock struck twelve.
“Happy New Years!” Daisuke grinned. “Did you decide on your resolution?”
Satoshi blinked, clearing his vision of the light and looking over at Daisuke.
“Yes, I have.”
“Great! Tell me!” Satoshi smiled.
“Later, Daisuke.”
“What? Why?”
Satoshi stood up, trying not to wince at how hard it was to move from the cold. “Because right now isn’t the time.” He extended a hand to a pouting Daisuke, who took it nonetheless.
“You’ll tell me later, right?”
Satoshi nodded, and their talk turned to other things as they went inside.
I resolve to tell you I love you this year, Daisuke.

“Satoshi, why are you panting on my doorstep at 11:56 PM on the thirtieth of December?”
