The rivalry between the two cousins- Bellatrix Black and Sirius Black- was legendary.
It was common knowledge that they were both the oldest offspring in the latest branch of a very old and mighty family so it was expected that they they would compete on who would bring the most glory to the ancient and most noble house of Black. Ever since Bella met Sirius in the nursery and tossed a pillow towards his direction and effectively hit his face, the lines were drawn. Whatever Bella did, Sirius had to beat it. Their parents encouraged the friendly competition with almost unhealthy enthusiasm.
Their competition didn't even have to be magical. Mischief, mayhem and sibling relationships also became battlegrounds. Bella was a terror ever since she set one foot in front of the other and Sirius was a headache since he started to talk. Since they were almost the same age- Bella was older by two years- they were always together whenever their parents visited with each other. It fostered a sort of love-hate relationship between the two cousins that can never be broken, even with the arrival of other offspring.
It was the summer after Bellatrix's third year at Hogwarts. She hated visiting Grimmauld's Place because it was hot and stuffy and she couldn't stand to see Sirius after the fiasco. (How could the heir of the most ancient and most noble House of Black become a Gryffindor? It was preposterous! At least she won because she got into Slytherin even before the Sorting Hat touched her pretty little head.)
She stomped down the stairs after abandoning her sisters with Regulus to find the liquor cabinet. It wouldn't hurt to have a little nip to divert her attention. Besides, Sirius hadn't tried stealing alcohol. She smiled smugly as she reached the stuffy living room where the bar stood.
"Isn't a little early for you, Bella?" Sirius's voice surprised her. She turned towards her left and frowned at him. "I didn't know you wanted to be like your mother."
"As long as I don't look like yours," she replied sweetly before taking a swig. "I win."
"No, you don't," he said as he grabbed the bottle to take two gulps in quick succession. "I do."
With his triumphant grin, their drinking war started. The summer afternoon aged. The cousins got drunker and louder. They reviewed their previous contests and boasted their achievements. It wasn't long before they got around to his Sorting.
"Bloody hell, you're a Gryffindor," Bellatrix sneered "You're a shame."
"And you're drunk," Sirius replied smartly. He laughed at her. "I don't really care about that. I have a good bloody time in my House. At least they're pleasant to look at."
"Are you saying I'm ugly?" She cried out and aimed to kick him. Her vision was hazy so she ended up knocking the bottle to the floor.
"Your words, not mine." Sirius smiled charmingly. "Let's stop this, Bella. I'm tired of that old who-brings-more-glory-to-the-Blacks game."
"No," she said stubbornly. "I'm winning."
"Who's counting?" he retorted, grinning. "It doesn't really matter. What matters is being family."
"Getting sentimental, are you?" Bella burst out laughing. She slapped his back before getting up. Her steps wobbled but she steadied herself on his chair. "You're right about that, Sirius."
After that, Sirius stopped being the pride of the ancient and most noble House of Black. He reasoned that the rivalry was over.
Bellatrix never forgave him.
