Went and saw it yesterday with Mother and
OMG KILL ME DEAD THEY KILLED PIKE! *sobs* I started crying when Pike went down and kept hoping at first that he'd just be gravely injured and Jim and Spock would go on a revenge kick, but no they KILLED him and then Jim went on a revenge kick and Spock spent half the movie trying to mediate the fallout until Jim died and THEN Spock went completely ape.
Those two do not handle loss well, but you can't really blame them after all they've endured.
Though, I suppose it shouldn't be too much of a surprise that Pike died. It's a huge theme in stories that for heroes to come into their own, they must first endure the loss of his/her mentor. Obi-Wan lost Qui-Gon, Luke lost Obi-Wan and Yoda, the list goes on and on.
Loved the cameo of Leonard Nimoy. So Spock Prime has sworn to not reveal the schenannigans of the first timeline? *snort* Yeah, he'd totally swear not to do that, and then break the promise at the first opportunity.
Spock Prime: Nope, can't say a thing. You have to live your life and make your own screw-ups.
Spock: You know a guy named Khan?
Spock Prime: ... on the other hand, Khan was a complete douche who had this hugeass grudge against Jim and tried to kill him a billion times and even succeeded in causing my own death. Try not to get killed, Junior. It will just complicate things immensely.
Spock: o.O I'll take that under advisement.
Rest of the Crew: Does anyone else think that this whole conversation is insane?
I sobbed through Jim's death scene, with Spock sitting there with Jim looking like he can't even begin to comprehend what's happening in front of him, that Jim Kirk's luck has finally run out. And Uhura and Scotty are crying from a small distance away but don't dare speak to Spock. Then there was the whole "KHAAAAAAAAAAN!!!" thing which I knew had to appear somewhere in all of this, though, really, Admiral Marcus was just as much to blame for the state of the ship and Jim's death. However, that particular sonofabitch was already the victim of a crushed skull, so I suppose Khan was the one to focus on. Still, have never really seen Spock loose his shit that completely, not even when Jim goaded him over Amanda's death. It was awesome.
We've known for years what happens to Jim Kirk when he loses Spock - he wibbles and walks around on autopilot until someone tells him there's a way to bring him back. When Spock loses Jim Kirk, he goes homicidal and tries to murder the person he considers responsible. Now we know. Hugely excellent acting on Zachary Quinto's part. I applaud him for that lovely, heartbreaking scene in Engineering alone.
So, now they're off on the five-year mission and Carol Marcus is going along for the ride this time around? Interesting, considering I doubt Spock would give up his spot as Science Officer indefinitely. I'm guessing that he'll continue as the Chief Science Officer, with her as his second or some such. Also - love how pissy Spock got when he found out that she'd been 'assigned' to the mission. He was all, "WTF? I'm back, do not need yet another blonde hussy around my... er, the Captain. He's grieving and doesn't need to be taken advantage of. Yes, that will do." Still, it should be interesting to see how things develop with Carol and Jim, or if they'll develop at all. Carol had some good chemistry with Bones too. There could end up being a David McCoy this time around instead of a David Marcus(-Kirk). (Which would suit Spock just fine, says my inner Kirk/Spock slasher voice.)
Marcus' desire to start a war with the Klingons was rather... weird. Aren't the Romulans more the Federation's big baddie in this timeline, thanks to Nero's efforts to suckerpunch the timeline? I would think that even if Nero claimed that he and his stood apart from the Empire, it would still have generated quite a bit of anti-Romulan feeling within the Federation. If Marcus was so desperate to have a war, he'd probably have more luck in manipulating everyone toward the Romulans, not the Klingons. So... what gives?
Overall, I enjoyed myself immensely. There were a few plotholes, but then, what movie doesn't have those? I loved the movie all the same. Will definitely be ordering the movie online when it comes out (probably around Christmas, perhaps?).
