I just have to talk about this now, just to get it out of my system. It's insane, a lot of people have probably already said it (and much more eloquently than I could hope to achieve), but nonetheless, I'm going to talk about it.
Probably one of my earliest fandoms that I was involved in was Star Wars. Signed up at the Jedi Council Forums when I was about fifteen (oh god, was that really seven years ago?!), and was active on there for a good while. Even now, I'm still on there keeping up with the few stories that I still read on there plus the occasional new one that catches my eye.
There's this one that I've been reading, one of the many AUs for Revenge of the Sith. It's been awesome, outstanding, and riveting. Hey, it even has a bit of politics in it, an added bonus! But in the latest chapter, it brought up perhaps my biggest fic peeve ever: Mara Jade supposedly being the daughter of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Insert Female Character of your Choice Here.
Seriously, this idea drives me up the frickin' wall. Obi-Wan Kenobi did not have children. He didn't have freaking time to have children. He was a Padawan Learner up to The Phantom Menace, then he spent the next 10+ years training the most difficult child ever to be a Jedi Knight. When does that allow time for him to go out and romance a lady to the point of having a chld with her?
More specifically, the idea that Mara Jade was his daughter? No. Not happening. For one thing, Mara was younger than Luke and Leia by at least a year, and she has very faint memories of her parents and that she was old enough to understand that she was leaving them to go with Palpatine. If she was the child of Obi-Wan Kenobi, then it stands to reason that Palpatine just would not have left the man unscathed.
It drives me insane that people refuse to let go of the idea when the Great Flanneled One himself has stated that Obi-Wan was not Mara's father. Can people just get it through their heads that Mara Jade was quite likely a girl born out of the limelight only to be thrust into it when Palpatine found her, that she'd had nothing to do with the big famous people of the story before that? Omfg. *headdesk repeatedly*
Wow... that's probably the most energy I've been able to roust up in days.
