One bout down, six more to go!
Our first bout was Saturday night and it was one hell of a ride!
First, now that I know all the work that goes into pulling together an event of this magnatude - a HUGE thanks to everyone who helped. I was a massive undertaking and i was physically ill due to the stress of it (and i didn't have that much to do!)! I've been mentally taxed for weeks and the nervous stomach hit on Thursday. Oy vey! But it went off well and we know better now what we need to do differently and what/who/where/when/cost for next time.
We don't have final attendance numbers yet, but estimates on paid ticket sales were near 770+ people. Add in comp tickets, volunteers, skaters, etc and we had a great turn out!!
The Beach Boys showed up! They were playing a benefit in another hall in the convention center that day and got word that we were playing. I didn't realize it at the time, but I spent time talking to John Cowsill who is currently playing drums for them. I thought he was just a curious onlooker and gave him an eduacation in derby, and dropped my pants to show him my massive thigh bruise from earlier in the week! He offered to kiss it better. They even came to the afterparty. I missed out on that, but they talked to rampion for a few hours. You'll have to read her LJ for details.
There were a few injuries. Our Captain, Roller Vixen, twisted up her knee on the first jam and she sat out the rest of the game. That really sucked. But what's worse, in the second half, Apple Smacks of the Violent Femmes, went down hard, broke her shin and ankle and blew out a ligament/tendon, broke the skin with bone sticking out....poor thing, it was her very first game! She was an official for us last year and really had her heart set on skating this season. Hopefully she'll be back on skates in time for a bout or two yet this season.
Oh, I suppose you want to know if we won. We didn't. Banger Sisters lost to the Violent Femmes, don't remember the score at the moment. It was a hard hitting game, lots of action and tons of fun.
I'm tired. I'm sore. And I can't wait to do it again December 1st!!
