So there's a Make Your Own Alchemist contest on the boards. And the winner gets a special FMA rank. Needless to say, I want that. And since the FMA folder is full of idiots who will make shitty characters, I want to blow them out of the water with my awesome one.
---------------------------------------------------------
Name: Lena Irene Malcom
Nickname: The Silent Alchemist
Age: 19
Birthday: April 17
Sex: Female
Race: Amestrian.
Faction: Civilian.
Physical Description:
Height: 5'2
Weight: 124lb
Eyes: Green.
Here's an example (Also, that chick is really pretty.)
Hair: Dark brown, goes down to around her elbows. Slightly wavy and messy, has a few layers. See this
random Asian for an example.
Build: Average.
Measurements: 36-28-38, Women's size 8/Medium
Muscles: Slight. She can carry a decent amount, but it's not like she could drag a horse around or anything.
Dress: Oh god, how much time do we have? Lena mostly wears casual dresses, in what you'd consider hippie style. Knee-length and in basic colors like black, white, brown, blue, dark red, and green. Doesn't really go for patterns or fun stuff like that. Examples that I literally spent an hour looking at!
I'll make this her regular outfit.
Think this, but dark red.
I have no idea what this says.
Imagine this longer with a plainer belt.
Ignore the pattern on the skirt.
This this, but just with the dark green and black.
This one looks so cute at this length, so she wears black tights with it.
This one's just so friggin cute with the pattern, she makes an exception for it.
Accessories: Minimal. Pierced ears, wears
simple pearl earrings (they were her mother's). Hair pins for when she puts her hair up.
OMG SHOES: Mostly black and brown. Flats, boots, and occasionally sandals.
These. (I would seriously wound an infant for some of the shoes on this site. ♥)
These, like, exactly.
Imagine these in brown.
Last pair, I promise.
History: Lena was born in Galway, a town to the west of South City (I took the name from a map of Ireland because
the middle dot to the left of South City isn't named on on the map). Her parents married early and were quick to start a family; Lena was born to 20-year old Jacob and 18-year-old Abigal exactly 11 months and 3 days after their wedding. Jacob was a fairly gifted alchemist and made his living by fixing his neighbors' broken items for a small fee, while Abigail was a fantastic seamstress who was regularly commissioned by the townspeople to create beautiful clothes, linens, and other fabric goods. They had one of the smallest plots of land in the town and as such couldn't feed themselves by growing produce or raising livestock, but because of their talents they were more than able to provide for their small family without trouble.
From a young age, Lena had been taught the basics of sewing. She was nowhere near as good as her mother, but she could craft herself a simple dress or blanket easily enough. At the age of 10, her father started teaching her the fundamental theories of alchemy. She was immediately drawn to it, it was like real life magic! No longer would she have to spend hours trying to patch together a new quilt for her bed; all those times she'd poked herself with the needle while repairing torn clothes would forever be a thing of the past; and forget spending all day doing chores when she could just clean up with alchemy! Lena was beyond excited to learn everything possible about her father's work. On her 11th birthday, she officially unveiled her abilities to her neighbors, creating a perfect new doll out of what had once been an old pillow. Everyone had marvled at her skills and praised her, commending her parents for having such a fine daughter who would surly grow into a wonderful young woman. Their lives were, in a word, perfect.
Shortly after Lena's 12th birthday, Abigail was excited to announce that she was nearly two months pregnant. Instead of feeling jealous at the new arrival, the little girl was overjoyed at the thought of becoming a big sister. She spent her days using alchemy to create dolls and clothes for her sibling. She even decided to forgo her training and spent three months hand-stitching a small blanket bearing a bright yellow chickie for the new arrival. She would talk excitedly at length about all the stories she would tell her brother or sister and all the songs she'd sing to them. However, her mother went into labor almost two months early. She was able to deliver the baby after eight hours of bloody, painful childbirth but was ultimately unable to recover. As she lay dying two days later, she made her husband and daughter promise not to attempt human transmutation. She knew it was too dangerous and didn't want her family to suffer more trying to bring her back.
Having been born so early and with such trouble, the new baby obviously wasn't in the best health. Named Aaron, he was weak and sickly right off the bat. He ate very little and rarely cried or moved around much. Still, Lena adored him. She'd spend every free moment holding him and singing to him and telling him stories. Despite his poor health, Aaron lived for an astounding five months before dying quietly in his sleep; Lena was 13. Still trying to move on in the wake of Abigail's passing, Aaron's death left the surviving family emotionally destroyed.
Without openly discussing it, Jacob and Lena wordlessly agreed on what they should do next. Both threw themselves into researching human anatomy, medical alchemy, and any rumor involving alchemy's greatest taboo. Their property fell into disrepair and the pair turned down all interaction with friends and neighbors as both were consumed by their studies. They rarely left the house except for research purposes and to spend their rapidly dwindling funds on groceries and other necessities. The two of them spent months locked away, meticulously crafting a theory for human transmutation. Finally, after ten months of scrutiny, they hit a breakthrough; they were ready to bring little Aaron back.
June 12th was a warm, slightly muggy evening. Just after sundown, 34-year-old Jacob and 14-year-old Lena slipped into the old work shed behind the house where all the supplies were ready and waiting for the big event. Carefully, father and daughter drew the transmutation circles onto the faded wood of the floor, making sure to copy the figures exactly from their research notes. Though nervous, the Malcom alchemists forged ahead, activating the array and flooding the small room with unearthly light.
At first, it seemed like it was working. A wind blew around them, the mass of ingredients in the middle of the room began to move and transform. Moments later, however, a large eye opened in the center of the circle. Lena heard a frantic yell and looked over to see her father being broken down and taken into the eye. Before she could do anything to help, she doubled over in agony as pain shot through her body. It felt like she was being ripped apart. She closed her eyes but when she opened them, the girl found herself in a large, white room instead of the shed. Behind her stood an enormous, decorated gate. In front of her sat a white being, grinning at her with a smile just a bit too wide.
"Hello, alchemist," it spoke to her in a taunting voice. "I am the Universe, the World, the Truth. You have trespassed on God's domain, and for that you must pay." Lena opened her mouth to speak, but was silenced by the long, black tendrils that suddenly emerged from the open gate to capture her. She found herself speeding weightlessly along the dark void, loudly protesting as more and more information was shoved into her brain. Just when she felt like she was about to die, she saw a light; it was Aaron. Reaching out for him, she was immediately thrown back into the white room just as she was about to touch him. The white being smirked at her. "Sorry, that's all I can show you for that price," it said, it's voice sounding noticeably different and very familiar. The next thing Lena knew, she landed hard on the floor of the old shed. Head pounding and feeling dizzy and sick, she threw up and promptly passed out.
She awoke the next morning to the sound of rain slamming against the rickety roof above her. Still trying to get her bearings, she was startled by a loud crack of lightning outside and tried to scream. Hand flying to her throat, she attempted in vain to call out, scream, whisper, anything. No matter what she did, no sound came from her. It was then that the cold realization hit her: the young girl who loved to sing and tell stories to her little brother would never make another sound. That familiar voice in which the Truth being had spoken in had been her own; it had taken her vocal cords as payment.
But wait! If she'd lost her voice and her father in the transmutation, then surly their hard work had paid off! Ignoring the protest of aches in her body, she hurried to the center of the circle where she knew Aaron would be. However, what she saw was anything but the boy. The creature in front of her was barely human. Mangled limbs protruding out at odd angles in nowhere near the right places; malformed bones sticking out from places not covered by skin; twisted, unnatural thing laying in a pool of blood. It was anything but her precious baby brother, it was a monster. It was also clearly dead.
Lena lost what little strength she had left at that point, sobbing silently on the floor in front of the thing that had come back in the little child's place. She sat there for an hour before she found the nerve to move. It was that point where she performed her first act of alchemy without an array and destroyed the creature she and her father had inadvertently created.
It took two weeks before Lena had worked up the courage to leave the house for food and supplies. It didn't take long for the townspeople to figure out that there was something very, very wrong with the young alchemist. No matter how they asked, she wouldn't speak to them. Even if she'd been able to, she was so ashamed of her actions that she would not have told them anything anyways. Because of her silence on the issue, the neighbors were forced to draw their own conclusions about what happened that night. The story they eventually grew to believe was that Jacob had finally snapped due to his immense grief and left town, trying to forget his family's tragedy. The poor girl he abandoned was so traumatized by her father's actions that she had stopped speaking because of depression. Lena never bothered to correct anyone about the idea.
Six months later, Lena boarded a train heading west and left her hometown forever. She'd managed to save up a decent amount by taking over Jacob's business of repairing goods for money. The people were so impressed by her improved skill, they assumed she had thrown herself completely into study and improvement in the wake of her father's disappearance. She just couldn't handle living in that same house where her entire family had gradually been destroyed in front of her. She used that money to travel around the country, never finding a good place to settle down permanently. At one point, she learned that someone from the military had come looking for her at her old house and was interested in contacting her. Automatically suspicious, she decided to leave the country for an extended period of time. She's been living down south in Furetina, Aerugo for the past year, where she makes a good living as one of the few alchemists in the area. She lives in a quaint two-bedroom house about a mile from the sea, with the bigger bedroom used as a study. She refuses to discuss her past or lack of voice with anyone who asks. She's thinking of getting a puppy to liven things up.
Personality: Quiet (well, duh). Lena was always a patient and well-behaved little girl who loved school and learning about alchemy. Obviously, family was very important to her, and she would do anything to make them happy. She was always one of those happy, perky kids who would pick flowers and sing little made-up songs and make everyone smile. After Aaron's birth and her mother's death, her maternal instinct kicked in a lot, and she devoted her time to making sure he was comfortable and happy. Her father told her there was a good chance the baby wouldn't live long, so she wanted to make the most of the time they had together. Once she lost her voice, she lost her spark. Lena became withdrawn and somber, never smiling much. Eventually, she started coming out of her shell again after a few years. She started coming to terms with her past and has slowly been able to move on with her life. Unlike Ed and Al, she has no interest in recovering what was taken from her. She agrees with Truth, it was the penalty she had to pay for doing what was forbidden.
Alchemy Style and Specialty: Lena doesn't really have a specific style or specialty. She does circle-less alchemy since she saw the gate, but she doesn't have a particular type like fire or anything. Instead of being amazingly brilliant at just one kind, she'd rather be alright at a lot of different things so that she can be useful in more situations.
Other: Lena has two different journals. Because she can't speak, she carries
this one around to communicate with people. She has
this bigger, fancier one that she keeps in her study. It contains all her research notes and alchemy theories that she's collected over the years. It's 85% full and she needs to get around to buying a new one for when she fills this one up.
She's left-handed.
Lena is an aquaintance of Jude, the man from the Blind Alchemist gaiden. He and her father were collegues who knew each other through a mutual friend, but Lena never met him while Jacob was alive. During her travels, she ended up visiting his manor for a talk. But because he's blind and she's mute, needless to say it didn't go too smoothly.
