Yeah, I would guess that; Poe was really the start of modern detective fiction, wasn't he? I'm probably just spoilt by all the contemporary literature I read. Wish I got to read such stuff for my degree; I find non-fiction so tiresome... But I mostly just ignore my work and read on the side anyway, which is why I'm not doing an EngLit degree...much as I'd probably enjoy it.

Detective fiction was only developing around the time of those novels so it tends towards being a bit formulaic. Linda La Plante is fantastic though.
