In the continuing series of small to medium essays, this is the second of the series. This time, it reflects on the Invictus in short, a covenant in the game Vampire: the Requiem.
Girls, Money, Blood: The Invictus
Let's get something straight. The Invictus is not the Camerilla. The differences between the first version of the World of Darkness and the second, are staggering. Besides the obvious lack of a global world conspiracy, the Invictus thrives best when the world is disorganized. It keeps other Kindred looking for leadership; leadership, they are too willing to give.
They have it all. Beauty. Money. Power. And easy access to construct herds that can get a Kindred through their days in fairly nice comfort. Enough for a rainy-day. Enough to last a lifetime. They entice other kindred with what they have readily at their disposal. Money to appeal to the human side. The aforementioned blood for their bestial side. Advocates who are good at their job usually drill it into the heads of their targets that the Invictus have the power. That the Carthians will take what they have and give it to everyone gratis. That the Ordo Dracul doesn't offer what is really important (see title), the Crone are crazy and the Lancea Sanctum also crazy.
And for the most part. They are right. Wrap the lie in as much truth as possible, and you come up with something rather convincing.
In any case, the Invictus are steeped in ceremony and tradition in an effort to retain to a highly regimented society. The problem with being in the now? Because there isn't as much regimented structures in today's society. When was the last time, you went to an etiquette class? Go ahead, I'll wait.
Point. In any case, this highly regimented structure is really just for one thing. Chaining the beast in your psyche. It's not about putting on some anachronistic show. It's just for the structure of the thing. It keeps people together rather than falling intro draugur city. It isn't about the parties or the glitz or the glam. It's a means to an end. Not the end like the Camerilla in the former world of darkness made it out to be.
It contributes, ironically, to a disorganized system because it keeps them in power. It is, in the end, all about Control. In the grandest sense.
