Margie smiled at her. “The molecular model looks great. I know you’ll get an A.” Ally blushed. She rolled her eyes and laughed. “You know it’s true.”
Ally smiled. “Your volcano looks great too. You’ll get an A too.”
Jake walked towards her and smiled. “I took your advice and did the solar system.” She blinked. He never talked to her during school unless he was forced to. “I think it turned out good.”
She looked at it and nodded. “It looks pretty good.”
He winked at her. “Thanks.” He walked away.
Margie’s eyebrow rose. “That was weird.” Ally looked at her in confusion. “He never talks to you.” Ally nodded and shrugged. “I don’t trust him and you shouldn’t either.”
Ally smiled. “He’s only being nice because I tutor him, Margie. I don’t trust him.” Margie rolled her eyes. “I swear I don’t. He’s just being nice so I keep tutoring him. That’s all.”
She sighed and nodded. “Ok, I’ll pretend to believe you.” Ally laughed and rolled her eyes. “Just be careful, ok?”
She nodded. “I promise I will be.”

Ally walked into the cafeteria and let out a shaky breath. Margie had to meet with the guidance counselor and Ally was forced to eat alone. She maneuvered around people and prayed no one bothered her. Yesterday, Mike Ryan took it upon himself to hit her in the middle of the chest with a spoonful of mashed potatoes and everyone laughed. She saw an empty table and walked as fast as she could before anyone had time to mess with her. She froze when she saw the new kid Philip Williams sitting there. She gulped. “E-Excuse me?” He looked up. She prayed he wouldn’t humiliate her like the others did. “I-Is it ok if I sit here?” He shrugged. She sat down and stuck out her hand. “I’m Ally O’Brien.” His eyebrow rose as he stared at her. She blushed and pulled away her hand. She stood up. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to bother you. I’ll leave.”
Philip stood up and stopped her. “You don’t have to leave.” She looked at him. “I’m Philip Williams.” She sat down and smiled. He sat down. “I’m sorry for being rude before. You’re just the first person who spoke to me and I was surprised.”
Her head cocked to the side. “Really?” He nodded. “I heard you never spoke to anyone.”
He smiled. “Well, I don’t know anyone and it’s awkward to start a conversation with a complete stranger.” She nodded eagerly. “So, Ally O’Brien, why did you decide to be the first person to speak with the new kid?”
She blushed. His smile grew. “My best friend Margie Sinclair had a meeting with the guidance counselor and we always sit together.” He nodded slowly. “I thought this table was empty and I had no where else to sit.”
He looked confused. “What about your other friends?” She looked down in embarrassment. He blinked. “Oh-”
Erica walked past and smirked. “Are you trying to flirt with the new kid, loser?” Ally blushed. Philip’s eyebrow rose. “Don’t waste your time with the loser. Her patheticness might be contagious.”
Philip sneered. “I’d rather that than catch your bitchiness.” Erica blinked. Ally’s eyes widened. No one, with the exception of Margie, ever stood up for her before. “Now, if you’ll excuse us, Ally and I were having a conversation.” Erica stuttered. “Run along, little girl. You’re not welcome here.”
Ally stared at him in shock. “Y-You didn’t have to do that.” Philip shrugged. “They will torture you now for defending me.”
He smiled. “Let them try.” She smiled. “You were the only one nice enough to come talk to me.” Her smile grew. “Plus, if she is one of the popular people, I don’t want to bother with them. She was a bitch!” Ally laughed. “You have a great laugh.” She blinked. “You don’t get a lot of compliments, do you?”
She looked away from him and shrugged. “They don’t seem to like me very much.”
He looked confused. “Who?”
She shrugged. “Everyone.” He sighed. “The teachers are always nice to me but I think…they pity me.” He blinked. “Is that why you’re being nice to me?”
He shook his head. “I don’t pity you, Ally. I don’t even know you.” She nodded. “I pity them because they don’t give you a chance.” She smiled in surprise. He smiled. “So, what grade are you in?”
She smiled. “I’m a senior. What about you?”
He smiled. “I’m a senior too.”
She took a sip of her drink. “Where did you transfer from?”
He shrugged. “I’m originally from Detroit. My dad got a new job so we had to move here.”
She sighed. “It must be hard for you. Leaving everything behind to start here in your senior year.” He nodded. “How do you like it here so far?”
He smiled. “It sucks here.” She laughed and nodded. “But today was the first day that it sucked less.” She smiled. “Do you know of an animal shelter or something around here? My dad said volunteering would look good on my college applications.”
She nodded. “Yes, I do. I volunteer there and at the homeless shelter. I could show you around.” She gulped. “I mean if you want me to.”
He smiled. “I’d appreciate it if you did.” She smiled. “Could you show me around today after school?”
She sighed. “It will have to be around five. I have to tutor someone after school.”
He nodded. “That’s fine. I’ll wait for you.” She smiled. “Do you want me to drive?”
She shrugged. “If you don’t mind. I don’t have a car.” He smiled and shrugged. “I’ll be tutoring in the library so you can find me there.”
He smiled. “I look forward to it.” She blushed.

Jake walked into the cafeteria and sat down. “What’s going on?”
Erica smirked. “You have some competition for the loser.” He looked confused. He turned his head to where she pointed and blinked. Ally was talking and laughing with the new kid. “He had the nerve to defend her.”
He shook his head. “He’s new and doesn’t know any better.” Erica shrugged. “I’m sure Mike or Tim will fill him in.”
Chloe laughed. “I’m sure Alex will be happy to tell him how much of a loser she is.”
Jake nodded and laughed. He watched Ally as she spoke with the new kid. She looked happy and seemed to be enjoying herself. He didn’t like it. He didn’t want competition for Ally. He didn’t expect competition for her. He stood up and walked over to them. They were laughing hysterically. “What’s so funny?” They stopped laughing and stared at him closely. He smiled. “Hey Ally.” She nodded. She had no idea why he was talking to her in front of people. “Are we still on for today or do you have to work or save the world?”
Philip smirked. “I didn’t know you were a super hero! Where do you keep your cape?”
Ally laughed. Jake scowled. “A true super hero is like a magician. They never reveal their secrets.” Philip laughed. She looked at Jake. “Yes, we’re still on for today. I’ll save the world after we’re done.”
Jake nodded. “Ok, I’ll see you then.” He looked at Philip. “I’m Jake Mitchell.”
Philip smiled. “I’m Philip Williams.” Jake nodded. “So, Ally, is the place far or what?”
Ally shook her head. “It’s not far. It takes longer by bus, obviously, but its like a ten minute drive.”
He nodded. “That’s not bad. Will they let me start right away or will they get back to me?”
She shrugged. “They will interview you so they can make sure you aren’t a freak.” Philip laughed. Jake stared at them. He didn’t like them ignoring him. “But the process will be faster if I recommend you.”
He smiled. “Will you?”
She nodded. “Of course I will.” She eyed him closely. “You aren’t a freak, right?”
He winked at her. “Only on the weekends.”
She laughed. “That’s the best time to be one.”
Jake’s eyebrow rose. “What are you two talking about? Where are you two going?”
Ally looked at him in surprise. She forgot he was there. “Philip is going to volunteer at the animal shelter with me. I’m going to show him around after we’re done tutoring.”
Jake blinked. “Oh, I thought we were going to have a double session today because of the test on Friday.”
She shook her head. “No, the double session is on Thursday so it will be fresh in your brain.”
Philip smiled. “I like brains. They are tasty.”
Ally rolled her eyes and laughed. “It’s only Monday. You have to wait to be a freak.”
He sighed. “It’s left over from this weekend.” She laughed.
Jake rolled his eyes. “I’ll let you two get back to whatever you were doing.” He scowled when they didn’t acknowledge him. “I’ll see you later, Ally.” She nodded and went back to talking to Philip. Jake walked away. “I can’t believe I have competition.” He muttered.

Jake stared at her as she finished explaining a problem to him. He took a deep breath. “Ally?” She looked at him. “I…I…uh…I wanted to thank you for all the help you’re giving me.”
Ally smiled in surprise. “It’s nothing, Jake. I don’t mind.” He nodded slowly. “You’re doing great.”
He blinked. “I am?” She nodded. “I’ve really been trying. I go over the things you show me every night and study the flash cards too.”
She smiled. “Well, it shows. You’ve really improved.” He smiled. “Soon, you won’t need me to tutor you.”
He licked his lips. “That would be a shame.” She looked confused. “I like having you tutor me.” She blinked. “I like spending time with you.” He kissed her. “I like you, Ally.”
Her face flushed as she pulled away. “Don’t do that, Jake.”
His eyebrows furrowed together. “What?”
She looked at him. “Don’t kiss me and say you like me.”
He looked confused. “Why?” She started to pack up her things. “What did I do wrong?”
She let out a shaky breath. “I know you don’t like me.” He gulped. “If you did this so I would keep tutoring you, you didn’t have to do it. I don’t mind tutoring you and I will keep doing it as long as you need me help.”
He shook his head. “I don’t understand. Why can’t I say I like you?”
She sighed. “Because we both know it’s a lie.” He sighed. “I’ll keep tutoring you as long as you don’t kiss me and say you like me when we both know you’re lying.”
He nodded slowly. “Alright.” She looked at him. “I didn’t mean to upset you.”
She shrugged. “It’s fine. Just don’t do it again.”
He stared at her. “I thought…I thought you’d like me saying that and kissing you.” She shook her head. “When did that change?”
She bit her lip. “It changed last summer at the lake.” She muttered.
His eyes widened. “Ally-”
Philip walked over to them and smiled. “Are you ready to go?” He blinked when he saw the look on Ally’s face. “Ally, are you alright?”
Ally nodded and stood up. “I’m fine. I’m ready.”
Jake stared at her. “Are we still on for tomorrow?” She wouldn’t look at him as she nodded. He sighed. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Ally.” She nodded and left with Philip. He sighed. “This is going to be harder than I thought.” He muttered.

Mrs. Rhodes stood in front of Jake. He gulped. She was handing back Friday’s test. She smiled. “This was good work, Jake. Keep it up.”
Jake stared at the test paper in shock. He got a C. The bell rang and he looked around for Ally but she was already gone. He got up and went to find her. He saw her walking down the hall and ran after her. “Ally!” She didn’t hear him. “Ally, wait up!” He caught up to her. “Ally!” Her eyes widened. “We got the test back!” She nodded slowly. “I wanted to tell you what I got but you were gone.” She nodded. He showed her the test. “I got a C!”
Ally sighed. “I’m sorry, Jake.” He looked confused. “I know you wanted to get a B or higher. We’ll try harder. I’m sorry.”
He laughed. “Are you crazy? Don’t be sorry!” She looked confused. “I’ve been getting D’s! This is great!” She smiled. He hugged her tightly. “Thank you, Ally! Thank you!”
Her eyes widened. “You’re…uh…you’re welcome, Jake.” He kept hugging her. She blushed when she noticed people staring at them. “Jake, you can let go of me now.” He pulled away and blushed. “So, I guess I don’t have to tutor you anymore.”
He blinked. “What?”
She smiled. “You passed, Jake. You understand the material now. You don’t need me to tutor you anymore.”
He shook his head. “I still need you to tutor me, Ally.” She nodded. “Don’t you want to keep tutoring me?”
She shrugged. “I just thought you wouldn’t need my help anymore since you passed.”
He smiled. “I still need you to tutor me, Ally. Now that I know I can pass, I want to get a B and I’ll need your help to make that happen.” She nodded. “Do you not want to tutor me because I kissed you? I promised you I wouldn’t do that again.”
She sighed. “It has nothing to do with that, Jake. I really did think you wouldn’t need me to tutor you after you passed.” He nodded slowly. “But if you still need tutoring, I will keep doing it.”
His smile grew. “That’s great!”
She nodded. “So, I’ll see you this afternoon.” He nodded. “I’ve got to go or I’ll be late for English.”
He shrugged. “I’ll walk with you.” Her eyebrow rose. “What?”
She stared at him. “You want to walk to class with me?” He nodded and shrugged. “Jake, what are you doing?” He looked confused. “You barely tolerated my existence before and now, you talk to me during school, you hugged me in front of everyone, you kissed me, and you want to walk me to class.” He nodded slowly. She sighed. “If this is some type of joke at my expense, I wish you would just get it over with now.”
Jake stared at her. “I-I…” He sighed. “I just thought since we are going to the same class we could walk together.” She nodded slowly. He shifted uncomfortably. “There is no joke.”
Ally nodded slowly. “I guess it will be alright if we walk together.”
He smiled. “So, how’s the animal shelter?” She shrugged. “Did Philip get approved to volunteer there?”
She smiled. “Yes, he did. He is also volunteering with me at the homeless shelter.”
He held in a sneer. “That’s great.” She nodded. “Are the two of you getting along?” She nodded. “Are…are you dating him?” She looked at him. He shrugged. “I’m just curious.”
She shook her head. “No, we’re not dating. We’re just friends.”
He smiled. “Friends are good to have.” She nodded. “So-”
Philip smiled. “Hey Ally.”
Ally blinked. “Hey Philip.” His smile grew. Jake glared at him. “What are you doing here? I thought you had English fifth period.”
He shrugged. “I got transferred into this class.” Ally smiled. Jake scowled. “Where do you sit?”
She blushed. “I sit in the front of the second row.”
He smiled. “That’s great. Ms. Chambers told me to sit in the front of the first row. We’ll be sitting next to each other.” She smiled. Jake’s eyes narrowed. Philip held her hand. “Let’s go. We don’t want to be late.”
Ally smiled. “Ok.”
Jake gritted his teeth. “We were talking.” They looked at him. “I was talking with Ally.”
Ally blinked. “Well, that’s true but we have to be in class now, Jake. We can talk during our session.”
Philip smirked at Jake as he squeezed Ally’s hand. “Ally’s right. The two of you can talk later.” Jake sneered. “Ally, are you going to the homeless shelter after tutoring?” She nodded. “I am too. Do you want a ride?”
She bit her lip. “Would you mind?” He shook his head. “I would appreciate it. Thank you.”
Jake’s eyebrow rose. “I could drive you.” Ally’s eyes widened. “If Philip has to be there before we are done, I could drive you.”
Philip smirked. “Don’t worry about it, Jake. I’ll take Ally. I don’t mind waiting.” Jake sneered. Ally smiled. “Would you like me to drive you, Ally?” She nodded. “Good. Let’s get to class before we’re late.” She smiled when he continued to hold her hand. Jake resisted the urge to punch him. “We’ll see you later, Jake.”
Jake glared after them. “I really hate that guy.”
