Ally/Jake.
Chapter 1:
Jake Mitchell let out a pitiful groan as he stared at his
test. He failed once again. He knew he would get the disappointed parent speech
when he got home. It happened every time he failed. He rubbed his eyes. Why
didn’t his parents understand that math and science just weren’t his things?
He sighed. He glanced
to the side when he felt her eyes on him again. Ally O’Brien had been staring
at him and following him around since they met in kindergarten. He tried to get
her to stop. He even talked to her twin brother, his best friend, Alex about it
but Alex just laughed and said she would stop eventually but she didn’t. Jake
tried being nice but that seemed to encourage her. He tried being mean but it
didn’t stop her. He sighed when he thought about what made her stop
more-or-less.
They were at the lake and she was with her best friend
Margie Sinclair. Ally kept staring at him and giggling whenever he looked at
her. He’d had enough and decided to do something really mean to her. It was his
girlfriend Danielle Giordano’s idea and he thought it was perfect. He shifted
uncomfortably when he thought of what he did to Ally.
He took her for a walk and Ally looked as if she was walking
on air. He smiled at her and told her she was beautiful. Ally looked at him in
shock and blushed. He convinced her to go skinny dipping with him. It wasn’t
easy. Ally was slightly overweight and extremely shy. It took almost a half an
hour before she finally agreed. He said he would let her go first and he
wouldn’t watch as she undressed. Once she got into the water, everyone jumped
out. Danielle grabbed Ally’s clothes and everyone, with the exception of
Margie, laughed hysterically at Ally. Ally looked at him with hurt and
embarrassed eyes. Jake never felt worse. He just wanted Ally to stop stalking
him. He didn’t really want to hurt her but that’s exactly what he did.
He tried to get Danielle to give Ally back her clothes but
Danielle refused. Margie grabbed a towel and wrapped it around Ally. Margie
demanded that Alex take them home but Alex refused. He was having a good time
and didn’t want to leave. Margie and Ally had to walk home.
Jake shook his head. That was last summer and he still
couldn’t believe he did that to Ally. She stopped staring at him and following
him around for a while after that. He would catch her staring at him from
time-to-time but it wasn’t the same. He rolled his neck and sighed. He hated
feeling guilty about what he did. He regretted it and thought a year was more
than enough time to make the guilt go away but it was always there in the back
of his mind.
The bell rang and he sighed in relief. “Mr. Mitchell?” Jake
held in a groan. Mrs. Rhodes’ eyebrow rose. “I think we need to talk.”
He hung his head in shame as he walked over to her. “Yes,
Mrs. Rhodes?”
She sighed when she looked at him. “Jake, you failed another
test.” He nodded slowly. “This is your senior year and-”
He smiled. “I know, Mrs. Rhodes. I’ve really been trying and
I think I’m getting better.”
Her eyebrow rose. “Well, you’re wrong, Jake.” He sighed.
“We’ve talked about this before. You agreed to get a tutor if your grades
didn’t improve. They aren’t improving.” Jake groaned. She smiled. “Jake, it’s
still early enough in the year to turn things around. If you have a tutor, it
will make things easier and it will help.”
Ally froze as she overheard their conversation. She had a
feeling Mrs. Rhodes would ask her to help and that was the last thing she
wanted to do. She knew she still hadn’t completely broken the habit of staring
at Jake but she was getting better. She had stopped following him around and
tried her best to stay away from him. After the skinny dipping incident, she
had no desire to be around him. She packed up as fast as she could and was
almost out the door when she heard Mrs. Rhodes call her name. She held in a
groan as she turned around. “I’m sorry, Mrs. Rhodes. I have to go or I’ll be
late for English.”
Mrs. Rhodes’ eyebrow rose. “I will write you a note,
Alyssa.” Ally sighed and nodded before walking over to them. “Ally, you’re an
exceptional student and you always receive top marks.” Ally blushed. “I was
wondering if you could help tutor Jake so he will pass.”
She avoided looked at him and plastered a fake smile on her
face. “I would…love to help him.”
Jake stared at her closely. “But I have a lot of…uh…commitments and I don’t
think I’ll have the time.” Jake blinked. He thought Ally would jump at the
chance to spend time with him and he knew if she helped him, he would pass.
“I’m sorry.”
She smiled and nodded. “I understand, Ally.” Ally smiled.
“If he can’t find another tutor, will you reconsider?”
She held in a groan and nodded. “Of course I will, Mrs.
Rhodes.” Jake’s eyebrow rose. “I really have to go to English now.”
Mrs. Rhodes nodded. “I’ll write you a note.” Ally smiled.
“Jake, I’ll do my best to find you a tutor.” Jake nodded. “Which class are you
going to, Jake? I’ll need to write you a note as well.”
Jake glanced at Ally. She refused to look at him. He sighed.
“Ally and I have the same class.”
She nodded as she wrote them a note. “Ok, here you go.”
Ally took the note. “Thank you, Mrs. Rhodes.” She smiled in
response.
They left and walked down the hall. Jake looked at her. “You
lied to her.” Ally pretended not to hear him. “Why did you lie, Ally?”
Ally sighed. “I didn’t lie.” She muttered. “I do have a lot
of commitments.” Jake rolled his eyes and scoffed. “Plus, you don’t want to be
around me.”
Jake rubbed his eyes. “Ally, I need your help.”
She rolled her eyes. “You don’t even want a tutor.”
He looked at her. “No, I don’t but I need one. If I don’t
pass, I don’t graduate. If you help me, I know I’ll pass.” She sighed. “Will
you help me?”
She bit her lip. “If you can’t find another tutor, I will
help you.” He sighed and nodded. “I’m sure Mrs. Rhodes will find someone else
to help you.”
He shrugged. “I’m sure she will.” She nodded. “But you could
help me more.”
She sighed and looked at him. “I told you I’m busy and will
help you if Mrs. Rhodes can’t find you another tutor. That’s all I can
promise.” He nodded. “Let’s go. I don’t want to miss the whole class.” He
rolled his eyes and followed her.
*~*~*~*
Jake slammed his locker shut and groaned. Mrs. Rhodes
couldn’t find another tutor and Ally was forced to take the job. They had just
had their first tutoring session and he was pissed. Every time he answered a
question, he got it wrong and she would tell him in graphic detail about how
wrong he was. He never expected Ally to be so condescending and patronizing but
she was. It was like she took great joy in making him feel stupid. If this was
how she was always going to act, he didn’t want her to tutor him anymore. He
jumped when someone tapped his shoulder. He looked at Danielle and smiled.
“Hey.” He kissed her. “What’s up?”
Danielle pushed her blonde hair behind her ear and smiled.
“Are you ok?” He shrugged. “How’d it go with the loser?” He groaned. Her
eyebrow rose. “What did she do?”
He rolled his eyes. “She was putting me down for not knowing
the answers. If I knew the answers, I wouldn’t need a tutor. She was acting as
if she was better than me.”
She scoffed. “She wishes.” She kissed him. “She isn’t better
than you, Baby.” Jake smiled. “Don’t worry. We’ll get her back.”
He shook his head. “Don’t worry about it. We don’t need to
get her back.”
She shrugged. “Alright but if it happens again, we’ll get
her back.” He smiled and nodded.
*~*~*~*
Ally sighed. “Jake, it’s not that difficult.”
Jake rolled his eyes. “It’s not for you. You understand this
crap.” She sighed. “What do I need math for anyway?”
She smiled. “You need it for a lot of things.”
He groaned. “Well, it’s hard and I don’t understand it.” He
looked at her. “How do you understand it?”
She shrugged. “I study.”
He gave her a look. “I do study!”
She shrugged. “Some people understand math easily while
others don’t.”
He rubbed his eyes. “Do those people also understand
science?”
She looked at him. “Are you failing science too?” He blushed
and shrugged. “Why didn’t you say anything?” He shrugged. She sighed. “Jake, if
you needed additional help, you should have told me.” He sighed. “How is anyone
supposed to know you need help if you don’t speak up?”
He glared at her. “I know how to ask for help, Ally!” She
rolled her eyes. “I don’t need this crap! I don’t need you constantly talking
down to me as if I was some idiot!” Ally blinked. He packed up his things and
left. He stalked down the hallway and over to Danielle. “The loser did it
again.” Danielle’s eyes narrowed. “What do you have planned?”
Danielle shrugged. “I don’t have anything planned but we’ll
figure something out.” They held hands as they walked out to the parking lot.
They saw their friends and walked over. “We need an idea to get back at the
loser.”
Tim Stevens smirked. “Is she still giving you a hard time,
Jake?” Jake rolled his eyes and nodded. “She probably thinks this is her version
of the revenge of the nerds.” They laughed. He groaned as Chloe Simms aimed her
video camera at him. “Chloe, do you always have to have that thing on?”
Chloe smiled. “The camera loves you, Tim.” He smirked. “So,
what do we do to get the loser back for being mean to Jake?”
Erica Savas laughed. “We could do what we always do to her.”
Mike Ryan laughed. “That never gets old.”
Abby Montgomery smirked. “Jake could pretend to like her.”
Jake sneered. “Excuse me?” They laughed. “Even I couldn’t
pretend to be interested in that!” He
pushed Chloe’s camera away. “Cut it out, Chloe.”
Danielle smiled. “Chloe is just documenting the downfall of
the loser.” Jake laughed. “Keep talking, Abby.”
Abby nodded. “Well, we all know she has had a crush on Jake
since like birth.” She looked at Jake. “Even after the lake incident, it’s
obvious she still likes you.” Jake shrugged. “All you have to do is convince
her you like her and then…you’ll crush her.”
Tim laughed. “I like it!”
Jake shook his head. “I don’t know. How do I do that?”
Mike rolled his eyes. “If you convinced the loser to skinny
dip, you can convince her of anything.” Jake laughed. Chloe aimed her camera at
him. “How do we crush her?”
Chloe smirked. “He should pretend to date her and take her
to the prom.” Danielle gave her a look. “Don’t worry. He’ll be with the loser
for an hour at most and then, we crush her. When that’s done, he will be free
to be with his real date Danielle.”
Danielle laughed. “That’s brilliant!” She looked at Jake.
“What do you think?”
Jake groaned. “It’s only October. I don’t want to waste my
senior year pretending to date the loser. I’d rather shower with an angry
bear.”
Danielle kissed him. “Don’t worry, Baby. We’ll still see
each other while you pretend to date the loser.” He nodded slowly. “At prom,
we’ll let her know she was an idiot to fall for it and then, she’ll realize she
should have never messed with you.”
Tim put his arm around Jake’s neck and they looked into the
camera. “It’s time the loser goes down!” Jake laughed. “Jake is making the
ultimate sacrifice! It won’t be easy for him to pretend to date that but we will help him through it!”
Jake laughed. “I’ll need all the help I can get. I can’t
imagine spending all that time with the loser. It’s going to be torture but she
needs to know her place.” They laughed.
*~*~*~*
Jake looked at his watch and groaned. Ally was late. She was never late. He rubbed his eyes. He
had to start pretending to be interested in her and he felt sick. He didn’t
want to spend anymore time with her than he had to and he certainly didn’t want
to have to kiss her. He sneered at the thought. That was the last thing he
wanted. He blinked when she sat down next to him. “You’re late.”
Ally nodded. “Yes, I am. I’m sorry. Mr. Spencer wanted to
talk to me after class about my science project.” He stared at her with a blank
expression. She smiled. “It’s due next week.” He groaned. “You forgot?” He
nodded. “Well, you have plenty of time.”
He gave her a look. “I only have a week.” She nodded slowly.
“What’s your project?”
She shrugged. “I made a molecular model.” He blinked. She
smiled. “You don’t have to do anything like that.” He nodded slowly. “You could
do a model of the solar system or use a potato to light a light bulb.”
His face scrunched up. “That sounds like something we did in
junior high.”
She nodded. “Mr. Spencer said he wanted to go back to basics
in science so people who needed help passing could get a good grade.”
He looked at her. “Why are you doing it? You’re on the honor
roll.”
She blushed. “It’s mandatory.” He groaned. “I’m sure you’ll
think of something.” She opened her bag and pulled out an apple. He looked at
it in confusion. “This is for you.”
His eyebrow rose. “Why are you giving me an apple? Isn’t it
the student that gives the teacher an apple?”
She laughed lightly. He stared at her. She had a nice laugh.
He shook his head and wondered where the hell that thought came from. “Usually,
the student does give the teacher an apple but this is my way of apologizing.”
He looked confused. She sighed. “I didn’t realize I was making you feel stupid
and I felt bad. This is my way of apologizing.” He blinked. “And, you always
get hungry during our sessions and we stop so you can get a snack. I thought
this would help.”
He gulped. “You didn’t have to do this, Ally.” She blushed
and shrugged. “You really didn’t know you were treating me that way?” She
sighed and nodded. “It’s ok.” She looked at him. “Thanks for the apple. This
will help.” She smiled.
*~*~*~*
Jake leaned against his locker and yawned. He didn’t want to
be there. He was tired and wanted to go home but he had to stay for tutoring.
Ally agreed to tutor him in science as well. They had to meet four times a week
instead of two now. He appreciated the help she was giving him but he still
hated having to be nice to her. He rubbed his eyes. He saw Ally walking down
the hall towards him. He nodded at Tim and Mike as they walked past him. They
smirked. His eyebrows furrowed together. “What are they up to?”
Tim and Mike walked towards Ally and bumped into her. Tim
knocked the books out of her hands and kicked them. Mike laughed hysterically.
“Watch where you’re going, loser!” They high-fived and laughed as they walked
away.
Ally sighed as she knelt down on the ground and picked up
her things. Jake rolled his eyes as he walked over to her. If he didn’t help
her, it would take her forever to pick everything up and he’d never get home.
She looked up in surprise. “Hi.”
He nodded. “Hey.” She looked away from him. “What happened
here?”
She blushed and shrugged. “I-I was walking and…my books…it
was an accident.” She muttered as her voice cracked.
He stared at the top of her head. “Ally, are you alright?”
She wiped her eyes. “I’m fine. I just had something in my
eye.” He blinked. They stood up. “Are you ready?” He nodded slowly. “It’s going
to be a short session today. I promised to help out at the animal shelter this
afternoon.”
They walked to the library. “You volunteer at the animal
shelter?” She nodded. “I didn’t know that.” She shrugged. “How long have you
been doing that?”
They sat down. She got out her books. “I’ve been doing it
for about a year.” He nodded slowly. “I was volunteering at the homeless
shelter and the director, Mr. Thompson, asked if I’d also be willing to
volunteer at the animal shelter because they needed all the help they could
get. I love animals so of course I agreed.”
He blinked. “You volunteer at the homeless shelter too?” She
nodded. “What else do you do?” She looked at him in question. He shrugged. “I’m
just curious.”
She bit her lip. “I also work at my dad’s garage. I’m the
receptionist on the weekends.”
He stared at her in surprise. “So, you volunteer at the
animal shelter, the homeless shelter, work at your dad’s shop, and you tutor me?” She nodded and
shrugged. “How are you on the honor roll if you do all that?” She shrugged. “I
was on the football team and baseball team and I was barely passing. I’m still
barely able to pass.” She looked at him. “When do you have time to do your
homework or sleep?”
She laughed. “I do my homework when I get home at night. It
takes some time because I have to help Alex with his homework but I manage to
get things done.”
His eyes widened. “You tutor Alex too?” She shrugged. “When
do you have any fun?”
She smiled. “I make time.” He nodded slowly. “I cut back on
volunteering when mid-terms and finals come up but the people I work with
understand.”
He shook his head. “I can’t believe it.” She looked
confused. “You do have time to sleep, right?” She laughed and nodded. He
smiled. “I don’t know how you do it.”
She shrugged. “I drink a lot and take a lot of speed.” He
laughed in surprise. She smiled. “We should get started.” He stared at her and
nodded.
