Summary: Neal just wanted to play outside with Satchmo. He had no idea that falling out of a tree would hurt so much.
Note: The Santa Day 'verse is an AU where Peter and Ellen are siblings. She is a detective with NYPD, and her partner was James Bennett until he was arrested for the murder of a fellow cop. When neither he nor his wife could care for Neal, Ellen talked Peter and Elizabeth into taking him in. Also, many thanks go to pooh_collector for asking for wee!Neal and cheerleading.
Neal knew that he shouldn't be outside without Peter or Elizabeth, but Satchmo was making sad noises by the door, so Neal opened the door to let him outside. He stood there for a minute, waiting for Satchmo to come back inside.
Instead, Satchmo did his business, grabbed his favorite tennis ball and dropped it at Neal's feet. Neal giggled and threw it across the yard, watching it bounce a few times before Satch brought it back to him. They played that game for a few minutes before Neal bounced the ball too hard and it went so high that it got stuck in the tree in the corner of the backyard.
Satchmo and Neal both stood under the tree and looked up to where they could see the bit of yellow that was their ball.
"It's okay, Satch." Neal patted the lab on the head. "I'll get it."
Satchmo's doghouse was beside the tree, so Neal climbed up on top of the doghouse. Then, the branches were low enough that he could swing himself up and climb all the way over to the ball. Once he had it in his hands though, he looked down and saw how far away the ground was.
He was too scared to move until he heard Peter calling him from inside. Peter would be very, very mad if he found Neal outside, so Neal started to scoot backwards toward the tree trunk. Halfway there, his hand slipped and then he was falling.
Neal shrieked as he hit the ground. Pain exploded in his left arm, and he started sobbing. Everything was fuzzy after that for a while. He was aware of Peter picking him up and holding him and of the car ride to the hospital. Elizabeth and Peter both held him while a mean doctor poked and prodded his sore arm. Eventually, the doctor gave him some medicine, and he fell asleep.
When Neal woke up, he was laying on the couch at home with his left arm in a white cast that was propped up on a pillow. He tried to sit up but his head felt swimmy, so he lay back down and called out, "Peter? 'Lizabeth?"
"Hey, Buddy," Peter said, walking into the room with a cup that had a straw in it. "How are you feeling?"
"Sleepy," Neal replied. "What happened?"
"I was kind of hoping you could tell me. Did you climb the tree out back?"
Neal slowly nodded.
"What's the rule about the backyard?"
Neal sighed. "I'm not supposed to be out there without you or 'Lizabeth."
"And now we have a new rule. You aren't allowed to climb trees, ever."
"Okay, Peter."
Peter smiled and held up the cup. "I thought you might want some juice. Is your arm hurting?"
Neal shook his head and held his right hand out for the cup. Peter helped him sit up and arrange his cast on the pillow in his lap before handing over the cup.
"Your arm is going to be sore for a little while, and I want you to tell me or El if it starts to hurt too badly."
"Is it broken?"
"Yes. Right about here," Peter pointed to a spot on the cast, "you have a greenstick fracture. It'll take a few weeks for it to heal."
Neal frowned and handed his cup back to Peter. "I'm sleepy, Peter."
"How about you lay back down, and we'll watch some Winnie the Pooh?"
The little boy nodded while Peter sat down on the couch and put a spare pillow against his leg so that Neal could lean there while they watched the TV. Once they were both comfortable, and Winnie the Pooh was having an adventure on the screen, they both fell asleep.
