Another day, another self-promotion! :D I got a little verbose this time, so I'm putting these behind cuts.
The Days:
1.
Something old2.
Something new3.
Something you made for someone else4.
Something you made just for yourself5.
Something for a large fandom/pairing/character6. Something for a small fandom/pairing/character
7. Something you're just really proud of
Day 6: Something for a small fandom/pairing/character
Fandom
WC is a pretty small fandom, but I also write a bit in the WC RPS fandom. I started writing it for an RPF meme that
embroiderama had in her journal, and then it kind of grew a mind of its own, which has been a unique and interesting experience.
Bookstore AU is such a joy to write. I feel like I'm watching the relationship between Matt and Tim evolve with everyone else a lot of the time. I have so much more to write, so many more angsty and happy moments both.
Bookstore is the closest I've ever come to writing original fic, and it will always be special to me. While I use Matt and Tim, Willie, Joe, and the other characters that everyone will recognize, the 'verse exists in a world where they are not the actors that they are in 'our world'. Matt was a firefighter that was injured in the line of duty and deals with his disability with courage and aplomb every day. Tim's an architect healing his broken heart by taking a chance on a relationship with Matt. Willie's an eccentric restaurant owner, Joe's a firefighter, Tiffani is Tim's best friend (and the mother of their teen daughter, Alexandra)... Everyone has a role, and I have tried to give them personalities close to how I perceive them to be in life, but the thing that drives this train is the developing relationship between Matt and Tim, and it's surprising and exciting and amazing. Sometimes, I really do feel like I'm just a witness, and scribe, to their lives.
Pairing
During the early writing of the Unbreakable series, I watched the episodes that featured more Neal and Diana on a pretty heavy repeat, and I find both Neal and Diana to be incredibly gorgeous and fascinating characters. They have a chemistry that I would love to see more of, so I decided to take a prompt from the
whitecollarhc community and write a little pre-Neal/Diana fic called
Cold Dark World. It's the only rare pair that I've attempted in the WC fandom, and I liked how the fic turned out. (Side Note: it was titled after a Weezer song that has an interesting dichotomy of ominous music but positive lyrics [about a guy pledging to love and protect a girl, and if she loves him, he'll be more for her]. Also, there's a literal 'cold dark world' that hypothermic Neal is experiencing for most of the fic.)
At the time that I posted it, I had planned on writing a follow-up from Diana's POV. As much as I love her, I find it difficult to write her voice at times, and especially in fics that aren't in the Unbreakable 'verse. So I got into the story using Neal (and a little h/c as I usually do) with the intention of exploring a bit of potential bisexuality with Diana. Truth be told, she was going to determine that Neal ultimately did nothing for her and what she really wanted was to make things work with Christie.
Diana's a strong woman and very confident in herself, but she keeps an emotional distance from those around her. She also has some control issues and some intimacy issues. I wanted to see her overcome some of these things with Neal's help so that she could find her happiness and emotional balance with Christie.
Character
Reese Hughes is such a wonderful character that didn't get very much screentime at all. I'm glad that we got that wonderful scene with him and Peter during In the Wind (and not only because it gave me the title for the first
Neal Hughes story!).
I've had the great pleasure of writing him a lot more recently, and he's quickly becoming one of my favorite characters. He wants to be a part of Neal's life, but he knows not to push - he's a great father but he doesn't want to overwhelm Neal with too much too soon - he's unsure of what to do but he doesn't want anyone to know. I really want to get him and Neal to a good father-son place, but it's going to take a lot of time. Until then, I'm having fun exploring his character and his relationships with the other characters in the 'verse.
