My elementary school used to throw an annual carnival. Consisting of several variations on aim & toss games, a cake walk and that strange watered down orange drink that was always served in McDonald's wax cups, I think it was a school fundraiser. The older students volunteered to run the game booths and hand out the cheap plastic toy prizes. When I was between volunteer shifts, I'd hit up the tarot reader booth.
Usually, a teacher or a spouse there of was parked in front of a crystal ball, stereotypical scarf tied meticulously around their forehead. They clumsily brandished a deck of tarot cards. I'm pretty sure none of them knew a thing about the cards. Never-the-less, I eagerly had my fortune read.
One carnival, the booth was run by a man I'd never seen before- I'd assume he was a teacher's significant other. Grade 3 teacher, Ms. Hartley stood uncostumed, beside the reader. She proclaimed, "This is Jaclyn" to the supposed psychic.
He shuffled the cards.
I can remember only one card that came up, it sort of looked like a mansion (and it was certainly NOT The Tower). I can't for the life of me figure out what crazy deck he must've been using, or what card he had actually pulled up, but his interpretation was surprisingly accurate. He said, "I see a house. An OPERA house in your future! Eventually you will own your own Opera House."
Okay, so obviously it was rigged. Certain students that teachers were fond of got special treatment. Why do you think Ms. Hartley was there, pointedly announcing names? I was well-known in Elementary as the aspiring opera singer. And even though young jerk-hole Jaclyn immediately twisted her nose and thought "I don't want to own an opera house. I WANT TO PERFORM IN AN OPERA HOUSE," this remains one of the most prescient moments of my childhood.
Never in my wildest dreams did I think that nearly a decade and a half later, I would be working on the admin side of an opera company. And what's more, is that the job is perfect for me in every way.
I can justify the fact that I own an army of dresses - a lot of them formal. I get to dress up, a lot. Amazingly, the job has allowed for an indulgence in other passions, like
Ghost Hunting. And not to mention, to be surrounded by music and the arts ALL THE TIME. My job is perfect, and wholistic and I realize that I am exceedingly lucky.
And who knows, one day down the line, I may just be running the opera company. Pretty much one step away from owning an opera house in this day & age.
