I have a dark confession to make. I am inherently a prejudiced person. I wasn't really raised that way but have learned it growing up in the South. I am prejudiced against almost anyone from north of the Mason-Dixon line. Yankees. Yes, I call them 'Yankees.' To clarify, being born in the South doesn't just get you into the Steel Magnolia club either. If one or both of your parents were born north of the MDL then you too, are a Yankee. It's kind of being born in Senegal: if one of you're parents is an American than come July, you too, will be waving the red, white, and blue.
Yes, neighbors, I am prejudiced. But calling you a Yankee is almost like a get out of jail free card. See, if a Southerner misbehaves or is rude I assume they must have some real reason, some personal tragedy, that accounts for their bad behavior. But if a Yankee is rude I ignore it. I assume they do not know any better and weren't raised to have good manners and that Southerners cannot expect Northeners to act with propriety, kindness, or tact. I know, I know, this is a character flaw that I have but I cannot seem to help it.
I just wanted to confess.
Now, if a Yankee wants to make a comment and call me a redneck that's fine. Like I said above, I won't expect anything less from them. If a Southener says something I'll assume they're having a bad day. So everyone wins.
