CHARACTER:

Name: Aziraphale

Source: Good Omens, a novel by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett

History: The world was created in the year 4004 BC. Aziraphale was, and still is, an angel who prefers earth to heaven anyway, and is friends with a demon named Crowley [formerly Crawly, the serpent in the Garden of Eden]. He was the angel who guarded the East Gate of Eden, but was demoted to being a Principality after having lost his flaming sword, which he didn’t really lose so much as give away. Somewhere around the 1000’s, he and Crowley made an Arrangement. Whenever one of them messed up in their duties or just thought to do so - for example, if Aziraphale saw something that could potentially be made a bit worse like Crowley would do, he would go ahead and do it and Crowley would report it as his own doing, and vice versa with Crowley doing something that someone would call ‘nice’, and the Angel would receive credit. This only happens every so often, though. Mostly, the Arrangement is a decided balance between the two, involving the aforementioned details as well as something simpler. Crowley commits a wile, Aziraphale thwarts. Thus, they are both technically doing their jobs while staying under the radar.

In present day, Aziraphale is a rare-book salesman, who isn’t very successful because he likes his rare books and doesn’t really want them leaving. He and Crowley try to save the world [after much persuasion and drunken conversation] from the Antichrist, who they can seem to find because of a mix up at the hospital [went home with the wrong family]. After watching the wrong child grow up for eleven years, the pair goes on a mad dash to find the real Antichrist before the world is obliterated.

Aziraphale acquires a book called “The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch” and proceeds to read through and decipher it, finding the location and time that the Apocalypse is going to occur. Unfortunately, it is very close, and Heaven tries to call Aziraphale up to aid them in the ‘inevitable’ war against Hell. Aziraphale tells them to hold on a minute and proceeds to contact Crowley first, or try, at least, to tell him what he’s discovered, but the demon is busy with other matters. A witch hunter named Shadwell comes into Aziraphale’s humble bookshop, thinking that Aziraphale is a witch or demon, and tries to kill him, causing the angel to back up into the summoning circle and is transported to Heaven with a rather flat “Oh, fuck.” In the process, Shadwell accidentally knocks over one of the candles in the bookshop and it proceeds to burn down after he leaves. Meanwhile, Aziraphale is definitely not joining the Holy Army, and as a matter of fact is incorporated, flying around invisibly around Earth searching for a body close to the place where Armageddon will begin so that he can help to stop it. He ends up inhabiting the body of Madam Tracy, a sort-of-friend of Shadwell’s, and the trio proceed to go to the Lower Tadfield Air Base on a small scooter that only goes about three miles per hour, which Aziraphale magics to go much, much faster. And makes it fly. They reach the base a bit before Cowley does, after the Four Horsepeople (because War is a woman) of the Apocalypse and the Antichrist and his gang (otherwise known as The Them) show up. Crowley arrives a bit later and The Them proceed to defeat and seal all of the Horsepersons except for Death, or Azrael. It seems that all is well, because the Antichrist, Adam, wishes to discontinue the apocalypse as well, and then the Metatron, the voice of God, comes down from Heaven, and Beelzebub, the prince of Hell rises, to make things more difficult, and to ask why the Apocalypse hasn’t occurred yet. Aziraphale and Crowley argue their way out of it, and ineffability wins out over the other logic that “It is written, so it must be so.” And just when Aziraphale and Crowley have them convinced, Satan himself begins to rise. Aziraphale picks up the sword that War was sealed into and sets it afire, and Crowley grabs a four way tire iron and they prepare to fight the Devil himself. Fearing the end is near for the both of them, but willing to fight anyway (what else have they got to lose? The bookshop’s gone, Crowley’s car is dead, they’ve committed treason by stopping the Apocalypse sort of…) Aziraphale states to Crowley that “Deep down, he’ll have known that there was a spark of good in him all along.” To which Crowley replies that he’ll always have known that “deep down, you were just enough of a bastard to be worth liking.”

This was about the closest admittance that the angel and the demon have that they’re friends, and in the end, they end up not fighting Satan, and Adam turns everything back to the way it’s supposed o be, The Bentley’s fixed, the bookshop is restored, and everyone loses their memories of the event, except for Aziraphale and Crowley.

Personality: Alright, revised personality portion~

Aziraphale, is an angel, and his intentions are always good. However, some of the things that he does…well, they aren’t so much for the benefit of mankind as much as for the benefit of himself. On a minor level, or perhaps a very subtle-but-major one, Aziraphale appears selfish, vain, manipulative and even mean; qualities of course that he will never admit to. Selfish by hoarding his books and only agreeing to helping Crowley save the world from the Apocalypse because if Heaven won the war he would lose so many things that earth provides for him. Vain, because he’s always got perfectly manicured hands and whines when his clothing gets dirtied up. Manipulative, because he tricked one of the characters into dirtying his hands so that Aziraphale wouldn’t have to.

However, like stated earlier, he does have the best intentions for things. Aziraphale really is a sweetheart when it comes down to it, and is a bit of a mother-hen, to those he finds he cares about. He tries to do good wherever he can, but doesn’t always accomplish this. Due to the Arrangement, partially, but living amongst humans for a while has indeed taught him free will. What Aziraphale wants is to live on Earth among the other humans for as long as he can, business as usual and all that, and to have Crowley around to talk to and such. It’s really hard not to be friends with him, especially when he’s the only other familiar face around for the past six thousand years.

Biggest Fear: Most likely it would be becoming a fallen angel, Falling out of God’s favor. He thinks that sometimes he’s dreadfully out of shape for an angel

Powers: I’ll crop his powers down to…lack of real healing powers, maybe they can be somewhat present? No wings, no ‘let there be light’, no “possessing” people, aaaannd…no being able to summon flaming sword. If you’ve any other suggestions, please do tell~

SAMPLES:

Third Person: In this sort of darkness, Aziraphale was glad that he had the ability to produce light out of thin air. This kind of dark was the all consuming kind, clouding your senses and making you fear what could be coming for you where. But, Aziraphale had dealt with this type before, and he wasn’t at all surprised when the orb of light shining in his hand revealed nothing but his normal old bookshop. There was a thunderstorm going on outside, and the power had gone out. He disliked using his power when it wasn’t absolutely necessary but he deemed it necessary this time, trekking in through his kitchenette and finding a candle, setting the wick aflame with a thought and dissolving the glow cradled in his palm.

He rather disliked thunderstorms. They reminded him of the day Eve had taken the apple from that horrible snake in the garden of Eden and the two humans had tasted knowledge. Which, said snake had recently made a good point about - if they weren’t supposed to eat the fruit, then why was that tree just set out in the middle of everything for them to find? …Crowley spoke too much, he thought sometimes.

He placed the book he was reading (A Picture of Dorian Grey) back in its rightful place on the shelf, as he walked to his room letting his fingers glide over the spines of his books, smiling fondly.

First Person: …Another weird room…what is going on?! Why can’t I seem to just get back home? …well. At least the candy is…somewhat of a bonus… Though it doesn’t really help that I still don’t know anyone, and I still don’t know my way home. Oh, dear…where is that Old Serpent when I need him? This has to be Hell’s doing…or someone Downstairs because I couldn’t imagine Heaven doing this…

Notes:
This Aziraphale is being brought in straight from another comm, Silent_Hell, so I’m going to put a bit more character info under this.
He met with Castiel, Sam Winchester, and Dean Winchester from Supernatural in the Silent_Hell comm. They discussed a few theories, alternate universes and times, but nothing really big came up there. He also talked with one Edward Elric, went out to look for supplies and such. So no major character relationships. He didn’t have any of his powers there, so he was unable to perform miracles or even use his wings. He was pretty uncomfortable with that, you can imagine, especially being in Silent Hill.
They also had high tech phones there, but I don’t think they were the same type, and don’t count on ‘Phale to know how to use any other technology - that’s what he has Crowley for. Ah, also, he has an injured arm, bitten by one of the monster dogs there. It isn’t horribly mangled, but it is wrapped up and hurts to move around too much.
