So my trip to Vienna began Friday, April 1st, with my friend Jamie picking me up and taking me to the airport. After hugging her goodbye, I entered the airport, my first time entering an aiport since I was around 8. I got my ticket, checked my bag, and made it through security, all with no difficulty and made it to the airport in plenty of time. The place was huge, like a giant mall which also happened to offer the benefit of providing air transportation. Made it to my first destination, DTW, with no trouble. I was, however, the only person on the plane who was completely fascinated with watching us slowly become farther and farther from the ground below. The plane was a puddle jumper and was very loud. Oh also to note, Pittsburgh has free wifi and cheap food, DTW has neither.
Making my wait through DTW was a breeze. I even helped another person find her gate. I waited a bit and then made it on to my much bigger plane for my flight to Amsterdam (AMS). My seat was near the back of the plane, directly in front of the bathrooms. I was on an end seat in the middle of the plane. I buckled in and read until take off. While taking off, an unfortunate event occurred. It seemed to be raining inside of the plane. It took me a few minutes to realize that the overhead compartment was dripping water on me. This occurred the entire duration of the takeoff, while we were not supposed to be moving from our seats. Turns out the lady next to me had put a water bottle in my overhead compartment and it was leaking. So I was slightly drenched during my 8 hour flight. The rest of the flight was pretty typical. My only complaints were the tiny amounts of food that were provided, but this is not an original thought, I am sure.
Landing in AMS was probably the most traumatic part of my flight. I had a really short layover, and being at the back of the plane, it took a while to get off, hit a kiosk and get my AMS boarding pass, get through a passport check and security, and still catch my flight. I ended up sprinting the entire length of the very long airport, and just barely making my flight. The plane to Vienna was nearly empty. A lot of people had missed the flight. They did give us some form of breakfast, and it was very exciting to see the Alps in the distance while we were landing.
Amanda met me at the airport, and we caught a train and made it to the hotel in 30-40 min.
To be continued...
