It takes far less time to fall asleep than Steve thought it would; for all he's pretty much convinced he's going to end up getting slugged when he wakes up for something he's said in his sleep, he has spent the last unthinkable amount of time awake and stuffed into a rental car, and there's only so long he can keep himself awake in the dark
