Coloring in black and white images

Another requested tutorial, I am being very good today, fulfilling two requests in one day! Usually I am the world's biggest procrastinator for requests :P

I am not using these images. But this is a photo I colored in recently. We will be working with the divine Gerard Butler in this tutorial.

EXAMPLES :

FROM THIS :
TO THIS :

This is the image I am going to work with :

make sure your brushes are set to this. The size of the brush I am using is a guide, it depends on the size of the image you are working with.

It also helps to have a point of reference, for the coloring, use a colored pic of the person you wish to colorize if you have one. I was lucky enough to find a colored one from the same photoshoot, but it doesn't matter if you can't find one. I am using this for my coloring reference :

you then select the dropper tool, which looks like this :

your cursor should look like the dropper, hover it over the colored image, doesn't matter where you start, click and the color should appear in your colors pallette. Then switch back to your brush tool. I started with the background first, and I colored it in from the color I generated from the color pic. You don't have to worry about being tidy at this point or worry about going over the edges.

Step 2 : For the finer edges try magnifying the work with the
tool.

I am going to work on his green shirt next. For the edges I used a hard edged round brush tool, adjust the size of the brush to suit.

when the picture was totally colored in, I went to image>adjustment>auto levels> edit> fade auto levels > mode > soft light. I faded the opacity a little.(this step is optional) Then I went to image > adjustments> variations>more yellow > more red. Then you can choose lighter or darker, or if you like it as it is leave it like that. I ended up with this.

any questions, just ask or if there is anything you are not sure about. Also if you find the pic too bright, try going to image>adjust> desaturate> opacity 20%

I am not perfect at coloring in as I am actually lefthanded and use the mouse with my right hand :P But I try lol.
