1a.) What does the previous statement mean to you?
I think of the classic desire to make life for the next generation easier/better than it was for you and yours. Its the desire to not have to put your children through the hardships you had to face.
This statement makes me think that my parents were trying.
2.) Similarly, when you hear someone refer to the "American Way" what do you think they mean by this statement?
2a.) What does the previous statement mean to you?
Imperialism. It's pure imperialist bullshit. It makes me think of the old Superman cartoons with the "Truth Justice, and the American way" spiel. Having the American way isn't so bad, it's that some people feel the need to force feed it up the rest of the world's arse.
3.) How would you describe your overall quality of life (considering such aspects as time spent at school and at work, amount of free time, ability to participate in activities that you enjoy, amount of stress that you feel, relationships with friends, family, and significant others, etc)?
3a.) How do you think the areas in your life that you are unhappy with (if there are any) could be improved?
Quality of life is directly proportional to the number of options people are given. As an American, I am presented with a surprising number of options. I can speak my mind, write what I want, read what I want, sleep with whom I want, for the most part deal with any unexpected consequences of said sleeping, worship whoever I do or do not want, eat what I want, try to elect whom I want, try to un-elect whom I don't want. I had the option to go to college, and I went. I have the option to use my free time however I choose. My quality of life could be far worse. I mean, hey I could be forced to dig sewage ditches in Kuala Lumpur.
About the only thing that limits my quality of life as I see it money, or lack there of.
4.) Are you currently in any debt? If so, how do you feel about this situation? If not, how do you feel about the growing problem of debt in America?
I have students loans. Lots, and lots of student loans. I have a maxed out credit card, Dr. Bills, insurance, no car, and no job. The growing problem of debt is that we are encouraged to be consumers, whether or not it is within out means. Hey, the government spends money it doesn't have on things it doesn't need, why shouldn't we? Now if only Congress wouldn't pass legislation to protect credit card companies against clients who declare bankruptsy.
5.) What are your feelings on consumption? Overconsumption? Luxuries and extravagant lifestyles? The importance of money in today's society?
As much as I would like to rant and rave about consumerism, I can't. I am a consumer I love gadgets, and malls, and cars, and houses. I like spending money on crap. I don't recycle.
I do have to wonder though, how many starving people Bono could feed if he sold his private luxury jet, and gave all the money to the needy, instead of just being a hypocritical arse.
6.) What are your feelings on large corporations? Mass media? The commercialization of society?
Large corporations employ alot of people. The mass media employs alot of people. The commercialization employs alot of people. It's not ALL evil.
7.) In what ways do you feel that the economy directly influences your life?
Options. Options are directly proportional to the amount of cash in ones wallet.
