my top characters of 2009
specific spoilers for Merlin and for the last episode of Heroes. general spoilers for the new seasons of NCIS: LA, Criminal Minds, Grey's Anatomy and Supernatural
Honorable Mentions
From right to left: Aaron Hotchner (Criminal Minds), Tony Dinozzo (NCIS), Dean Winchester (Supernatural), Dr. Robert Chase (House M.D.), Abby Scuito (NCIS) & Guinevere (Merlin)
10. Richard Alpert (Lost)
Richard: If I take him, he's not ever gonna be the same again.
Kate: What do you mean by that?
Richard: What I mean is that he'll forget this ever happened and his innocence will be gone. He will always be one of us. You still want me to take him?
Richard is amazing because a) he works the eyeliner look like it's nobody's business and b) his prettiness can make you forget how bad Lost has gotten. (It's like when they had Sawyer go shirtless to keep you from noticing plot holes. Darlton is well versed in fangirl) Plus he's immortal and speaks Latin, both of which are sexy. Most importantly, he's probably one of the few people on Lost who actually knows what the hell is going on. And even when he has no clue, he doesn't seem phased by it.
9. G. Callen (NCIS: LA)
"You gotta be kidding me. I'm being shot at by a Jonas brother... And I think I'm about to meet the rest of the family"
I chose him because Chris O'Donnell manages to convey "smart ass" so perfectly in all his characters and with Callen it's like he's not even trying and he still succeeds. But smugness when done right is something I admire in a character. And it's being done right here. Plus, I dare you not to ship him with Hanna.
8. Nathan Petrelli (Heroes)
"What do I have to be grateful for? I'm dead."
There were caps lock of rage when Nathan died. He was basically the only reason I was still watching Heroes. It was such a waste of potential. He was the most dimensional character on that show.
7. Castiel (Supernatural)
"This isn't funny, Dean! The voice says I'm almost out of minutes!"
I didn't think that Castiel could get more awesome after last season, but he seems to be proving me wrong on a weekly basis. Mischa's done a great job of keeping the character from becoming stagnant, which is always a possibility with secondary characters in SPN.
6. Lexie Grey (Grey's Anatomy)
"I know that he's not your dad. He was never there for you, and I would never ask you to give him anything. He doesn't deserve a thing from you. He doesn't. But he's - he's gonna die, Meredith. And so I'm asking you to give something to me. I'm asking - I'm asking you to give me my dad because as crappy as he was to you, he was wonderful to me."
Lexie is fierce, but in that "kill them with sunshine and rainbows and puppies' sort of way. She used to be just this big pushover who grated on my nerves, but now she's really coming into her own, and her interactions with other characters have really developed this season. She's helped filled the void that George left.
5. Dante Falconeri (General Hospital)
"Have you ever wanted something so bad that you burn for it in your gut? And you're like so close to the finish line, but you realize that it's just not going to be as simple as you thought it was. That innocent people who matter might get hurt."
For the most part, soap opera characters tend to fall flat when you try to compare them to the nighttime players. But I like Dante alot. He's funny and charming and he has integrity which is lacking on General Hospital. He's literally the only reason I still watch this soap.
4. Derek Morgan (Criminal Minds)
"I knew I should've told somebody about you when I was a kid! God, I was so afraid of you. I was afraid of the cops, what people would say. I was afraid of losing everything I was gaining."
I just started watching Criminal Minds this year, and immediately fell in love with the character of Derek Morgan. First of all, he's gorgeous - like the type of handsome that you cannot even describe because it just is. And of course, on a less shallow note, the character is also complex, but not in that overt way where you can tell the writers are trying to make you notice him. because let's be honest, the writers play favorites and Morgan isn't one of them. There's a low self esteem buried under that otherwise cocky exterior, and when it shows, it makes you want to just...hug him. Among other things...
3. Arthur Pendragon (Merlin)
"I know I have much to learn. There are some things I'm terrible at - cooking being one of them, but also knowing what to say to someone I care about."
This season of Merlin made me fall in love with Arthur Pendgragon. I love the fact that he got blindsided by his feelings for Gwen and how he's now head over heels in love with her and has no idea what to do about it. And how he's so awkward about the whole thing despite the fact that otherwise, he oozes confidence in whatever else he does. I also love how he's been so hard on Merlin, but you know deep down he cares for him too, even if he tries really hard not to show it.
2. Peyton Sawyer (One Tree Hill)
Haley James-Scott (about Peyton): and when I asked him if the fantasy was finally over, if he could finally admit that Peyton Sawyer was human after all. He said no. Peyton Sawyer is not human; she's an angel.
Peyton Sawyer is probably my favorite television character ever, but I feel like I'm cheating by putting her on this list seeing as she was only on for the first five months of 2009. But it was a good five months for Peyton fans. She married the love of her life AND got her baby, and then she hightailed it out of town before anything could go wrong. SMART COOKIE. She finally learned.
1. Kate Austen (Lost)
Kate: And I knew she was going to give him up for adoption but I just couldn't...I had to protect him. So I said he was mine.
Carol: Why did you lie? Why didn't you come to me in the first place?
Kate: Because I needed him...I'm sorry.
Kate Austen gets my number one spot because she continues to be the most fascinating character on television. Even when her storyline takes a turn I cannot stand, I still find myself invested in it and wanting to know where it's going. As much as I hated her raising Aaron, I have to admit my heart broke watching her have to give him away.
