Day One: Why Loving Kate is not as hard as it should be

Kate Austen is probably the most hated female in television history. Okay. That is an overstatement, obviously. But we can all agree she's pretty darn hated.

When I tiptoed into the Lost fandom, I was afraid for my life. Being a Kate fan was kind of like saying you hated America and liked to kick puppies. Someone was always going to be looking at you with shifty eyes. And you find yourself always needing to defend yourself. So for two and a half years, all I did was come up with reasons why Kate Austen should be loved. I got pretty damn good at it, if I do say so myself.

Granted, it's been awhile and the series finale of Lost kind of killed all the love I had for the show. But when I saw this fest, my first thought was MUST. CLAIM. KATE. Because even after all the heartbreak that Lost inevitably doled out to me, Kate Austen was still awesome and did not/does not deserve to be hated.

Kate Austen is independent. She made sure it was that way when she killed her father, severing any ties she had, and she never looked back. She is a strong, capable woman who never apologized for being different. She lies and she tells the truth and sometimes she does it at the same time. Just like one day she's all about self preservation and the next she's worrying about the US Marshall who took away her freedom or trying to find the woman who will take away her son - inevitably throwing herself into the fire even it will make things worse for her. She falls in love, but it's not cookie cutter romance. Guys throw themselves at her feet and she doesn't blink. She doesn't change herself into a one man woman just because that's what society expects.

Kate Austen is her own woman, and she makes up her own rules as she goes. As a result, some people aren't gonna like her.

Such is life.
