greek week

I'm about to go on a rant here...

Some of my favorite memories from being greek are from during greek week.  With that being said, I do not really believe that greek week is about greek unity.  I think it is about unity with your partners and unity within the individual groups.  The only unified thing about greek week as a whole is that everyone is in the same competition together.

On another note.  Yes, my sorority has won it for four years in a row now.  Does that mean we are nazis? NO.  No, it does not.  It does not take much to convince our girls to want to show up to things and be active in the sorority.  It doesn't take much to get them to the house to work on props with other sisters, hang out, order pizza, etc.  So many girls want to dance that we have to put everyone into groups so everyone who wants to be on stage can be.  We don't force people to do things, we don't yell at people, and we certainly don't do anything to give us a nazi reputation if you ask anyone who REALLY knows us.

Its easy to hate a group that always wins.  Not meaning that to sound cocky.  It's just true.  People don't hate the groups who lose, they hate the ones that do well, and consistently well at that.  It is sad that we cheer for everyone, especially for a lot of partners of ours from the past, and then hardly anyone cheers for us.  Some people will even go so far as to stand up and cheer for every group BUT us - and yet people think we are the ones who are overcompetitive.

I wish people could actually hear our conversations sometimes, because then they would see how we talk highly about so many groups and the things they've done.  Like when we sit around and talk about all the sweet mock rocks we saw, and props, and etc.  Our president even said that she didn't know if she was more excited about our first place win, or phi taus because she saw how excited they were when they won and how hard they worked during the week.

It took Brem a good six months or more until he saw past Tri Sigmas reputation.  He was like everyone else and thought we were stuck up, only want to win, etc etc etc.  Now he knows every girl, including all our new initiates, and they have completely convinced him otherwise.  Obviously we can't do this with everyone because it's easier tobelieve a reputation than to actually get to know everyone.

Every year at retreat the big topic is how to improve our reputation on campus.  We go to EVERYONEs philanthropy events to support them.  We did the haunted house with phi tau again.  We did our bid day with the Crows twice because we had so much fun with them.  Yet, some people still talk about how they don't like us when they hardly know us.  I thought every Tri Sigma I've brought around christy she has gotten along with, especially nikki, but apparently she doesn't like our group.  Their are certain people I dont like in her group either, but I would never judge the entire chapter based on that.

If Tri sigma doesn't participate in greek week next year would people like us more?  I seriously think we have to either lose or withdrawl completely to have people stop talking crap.

Anyways I could go on and on and on and on but it is a continuous battle that I am sick of fighting.  People are not going to change their minds about these and other stereotypes of other groups.  I'm sick of trying.  All I can do is influence people's opinions of me by the way I act.

On an end note...

I havent been as excited as I was last night in a long time.  Winning greek week with Phi Kappa Tau was the best feeling ever because they are the fraternity I hang out with the most, but also because so many people didn't believe in us.  A lot of our younger girls really got along with the younger phi taus, which is really great.  I can't wait to come back as an alumni and cheer our girls on whether we win or lose.
