I had just met Serena, and by the looks of it, she seemed to be a pretty cool person. I still couldn’t see the hunter side of her. But then again, I really couldn’t see the hunter side of anyone since I’d only just heard about hunters from her. Interesting being a slayer and not realizing that there are others out there doing what you do… and you’re unaware of it. Still though. Totally didn’t look like a hunter. She reminded me of me, actually. Before, of course destiny called, and I became that freak that burned down the gym, and walked the night.
…and got abnormally strong
…and had weird pointy sticks in her purse.

It’s an interesting thing, I mean, I know that there are people out there without power that choose to fight, and those people actually happen to be my friends. Xander and Willow. Not to say that they don’t have power, because they have a lot of it, and a lot of strength. But it’s all a different kind of strength. Hell it takes a different kind of strength to take on a fight that is virtually impossible to win.

Serena seemed to have a good head on her shoulders, and obviously a family that absolutely loves her…who also happen to be hunters. And apparently Angels. Complicated, but tight family from what I heard, and how highly she talked about them. Good for her.

Explaining where we were currently at would be a little difficult. I’m not really sure how it happened, actually…but I so wasn’t going to complain. The fact of the matter was, I haven’t had this sort of fun in too long to count. This sort of fun meaning: Shot by shot with a hunter and seven cards in my hand. In New York City. Playing poker. In New York City. In New York City.

..with no kittens involved. This time, there were weapons involved.

If Giles were there, at the particular moment, he would probably chastise me till the sun came up. Hell, conscious was coming into play with myself. Three geek wanna be villains actually came to mind. A big snake at a frat party came to mind, too. Those were the two times I was actually drunk, and both times ended in close calls. Well, not so much with the geeks, because that was a fluke, and Spike was there…okay, yeah bad call. But both of those times, I was technically the only slayer. Faith was around, but in jail the second time, and Kendra wasn’t in my life at that time.

This time, there were hundreds of slayers out there, and I’m 28 years old.

So, needless to say, taking shots with Serena started off with taking a walk, and her showing me around New York City. I wanted to show her my hope chest full of weapons, because, unlike most people, she didn’t find that weird one bit. Instead of heirloomy things, I kept weapons in there. And apparently, a deck of cards, and Spike’s old bottle of… whatever it was. Jack, Tequila, it’s all the same at this point. I haven’t got a damn clue from there. I hate shots, and I hardly ever drink. It’s too dangerous.. I don’t know how to play poker.

“Okay, two aces. That’s good, right?”

I hiccupped, and she laughed. “Playing cards with you, Buffy is impossible.” Well, duh. Not only do I fail at sober cards, being drunk isn’t exactly a winning factor either.

“You just wanted to con me out of all my weapons. I get it.” Since, sitting on her side of the table was a small double edged axe, and some holy water, with a silver 25 inched chain cross necklace. All the things that used to have a home in my hope chest. She mentioned something about learning from the best. Her boyfriend, her brothers, and a couple other people in her life taught her how to play. I couldn’t keep track of them if I tried. She had a lot of connections. I vividly mentioned that while she was learning how to play cards, I was stopping the first evil from bringing hell on Earth. She was a killer poker player, and blew me right out of the water.

So, I wasn’t hammered..not too hammered. Definitely not sober either. “Royal Flush, baby, here I come.”

She started laughing at me. “Buffy, you don’t really have much more to gamble with.”

I sighed. “You teach me poker, and I’ll teach you fighting, agreed?”

“Agreed.”

She started to give back the stuff she won from me, but I declined. She could have them.

“No, keep them. Really.” I had more than enough back in LA…and I didn’t use any of them around in New York. All I needed were stakes. Everything else was too noticeable in New York City. I had just made a friend, and I’m pretty sure, for some reason, we both needed a little girl time. Without actually being girls.

“We just played poker.”
“And you lost. Badly.”
“Hey, now.”

It happens.
