It's been too long so I'm writing now.
I went for a massive walk today along the asian shore from Üskudar to kadıköy. This took about and hour and saw crashing waves against the shore. Couples sitting as close as they dared and clinging to each other in romantic embrace. Men walking with each other, chewing sunflower seeds and discarding the shell on the floor.
It saw the grim dockyards in all their oily, workermen, grey concrete gory. I saw Hayda Paşa, the massive palace and the hospital, heavily garded by the military. (why?).
Kadıköy was the familiar, busy, bright, nice-smelling place it always is. I got enchanted by one of the buskers. Turkish law states that only the blind can busk for money. This guy was sitting behind a large casio keyboard and playing a
saz, which provides a particularly eerie sound. The beat comming out of the keyboard was bordering on techno; KICK SNARE KICK SNARE KICK SNARE KICK SNARE, at least industrial. The amp was high on the saz too, providing deep reverb. Some artists have spent hours wanking over an EQ to achieve this effect, I know I have. This blind busker achieves this every day.
I've also found
this excellent site (thanx loocy) with a wealth of interesting reading material.. I particularly recommend
