Polyamory, from my observations, is great for those that can handle it, hell for those that can't, and only works if every one involved is comfortable with it. But if all those things are in place, and you have the self-esteem to not feel threatened by another person dating your SO, it's pretty sweet.
I say give it a shot, and see what comes of it. But I have nothing to go on with that, other than missed opportunities suck.

i used to do the whole poly thing, and i can go off on the whole poly vs non-monogamy vs. all else distinctions....

but above all else, it's really important to know what you're getting into; even moreso than with a closed relationship, openness and honesty and trust and communication become *so* important....
