Tit for tat

Usually, the Uniqlo store in Ginza was always crowded. Many people came there to shop. Indeed, it was a Japanese brand, and it was far less expensive than the other stores in the neighbourhood: Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Prada….very fashionable but too expensive for most of the Tôkyô inhabitants.

A lot of foreigners also came to Uniqlo since it is the first Japanese clothes brand. And the Ginza store was the biggest Uniqlo in the world. A must-see in Tôkyô then.

It wasn’t Ida’s first visit here. When she had arrived in Tôkyô, six months ago, one of the first things she had done was to come here. She desperately needed some clothes, since she couldn’t have brought all the ones she already owned. Of course, she hadn’t even bothered to enter the luxurious stores around because she knew she couldn’t afford anything there. However, Uniqlo had been an Ali Baba’s cavern at the time and it was now her favourite shop in the city.

Today, Ida wasn’t looking for anything in particular, but only hanging around in the store, having nothing better to do. She sometimes paid attention to a piece of clothes but eventually gave up on it. She didn’t really need anything anyway…

After having walked through the Ladies’ department at least twice, she headed toward the Men’s department. She happened to find a beautiful scarf there a few weeks ago, so maybe she could find something interesting this time.

At first, nothing caught her eyes. But then, she noticed a lovely sweatshirt that she liked a lot at first sight. It seemed warm and she had heard that winter would be very cold. As she didn’t have a lot of warm clothes, she thought she could take it.

As she grabbed one sleeve of the sweatshirt, a hand grabbed the other one and pulled it. Ida did not notice it at first, and started pulling the sweatshirt. However, encountering resistance, she looked up to see a handsome man doing exactly the same thing. Surprised, the girl let the sleeve go and quickly added “I’m sorry!”

“No, I should be the one who apologizes. I didn’t notice you wanted it” the guy replied, putting the sweatshirt back on the hanger.

“Anyway, you can have it” both said at the same time.

“No, you!” Ida and the man repeated.

Their reactions made them smile. The man picked up the sweatshirt and reached it out to Ida saying: “Ladies first.”

Ida felt herself blushing and mumbled something unintelligible for the man.

“Please?” he added, smiling nicer and wider.

Ida couldn’t refuse now, especially since her heart had melted seeing the man’s smile. He had a smile that would make you do everything in order to see it again. Ida had never seen such a gentle smile.

She took the piece of clothe and nodded: “Dômo arigatou gozaimasu.”

The guy smiled again and turned around, while Ida couldn’t believe her eyes that a man with that kind of smile could really exist.

After letting her mind wandering on the subject for two or three minutes, she shook her head to clear her thoughts and took a look at the sweatshirt. It was very nice! However, something caught her eyes: 20 000 ¥

“What?!” she exclaimed. And then, realising she had spoken out loud, she looked around to see if somebody had heard anything. Hopefully not, it seemed. Nearly 200$! She definitely could not afford it! Much too expensive… As she was going to put it back on the display shelf, she had an idea.

***

It has been a long time since Jun hadn’t come to Uniqlo. Indeed, he had been so busy lately that he hadn’t had spare time to go shopping. So he absolutely wanted to enjoy every single minute of the welcome free Sunday.

While he was heading to the fitting room: “Sumimasen.”

He turned around to see the girl he had given up the sweatshirt for.

“I am sorry, but you can have the sweatshirt. Actually, it is much too expensive for me, I cannot afford it” she added, reaching out the piece of clothe to Jun. “Dôzo.”

“Oh, ok then. Thank you” the man answered, taken aback by the situation. Indeed, he had thought she had recognised him and had come to get an autograph or something.

“You are welcome” the girl said and took her leave. Jun stared at her back, baffled.

“That is very nice from her to come and get me to give me this. She could have just put it back in place and say nothing…”

Then, he headed to the cash desk.

Ida left the shop and, once on the street, made it for the subway station. No need to stay here any longer. She preferred to go back home and do the house chores. Her apartment was in a mess, and she had postponed the cleaning too many times.

As she was on the edge of going down to the subway stairs, she heard a voice calling: “Sumimasen. Miss?”

Ida turned around to check if the was the one to be called and her eyes opened wide seeing the man from the shop heading toward her.

“Him again? What does he want?” she thought as she answered “Yes?”

“I know it is a little weird, but, please take this” the man said, bowing and reaching out a bad to her.

“What the hell?” Ida did not move an inch, too shocked to even react a bit.

Jun raised his head in order to look at the girl, but kept bowing.

“Please…” he added, with an imploring voice and a shy smile.

Ida, feeling much embarrassed by this unknown man imploring her in the middle of the street, grabbed the bag hurriedly, as if it could prevent her from more embarrassment.

“Arigatou…” she said, coming up against the word. She felt herself blushing and couldn’t help but being mad at her for that.

The man seemed much relieved: “I thought it could please you.”

The girl opened the bag only to discover the expensive sweatshirt she hadn’t been able to afford a few minutes ago. She looked at the guy bewildered. This latter started blushing a bit and tried to justify himself.

“Actually, I think it would fit you very well. And since you seemed so disappointed not being able to buy it… Well, maybe you wanted it for your boyfriend, err…”

“Aw~ thank you very much! No, not for my boyfriend but for me. But really, you didn’t need to…”

“Ma~ I love pleasing cute girls like you” said Jun, winking.

Feeling herself blushing so hard, Ida couldn’t stop thinking that she looked extremely stupid.

“B..but, I have nothing to give you back… It makes me feel embarrassed…” she stuttered.

“Daijoubu. I don’t expect anything back.” Jun said.

It was the truth actually. He had come up with that idea that he would buy the sweatshirt and give it to the girl, if only he managed to find her before she disappeared in the gigantic city. He found her cute, and she had seemed so sad not to be able to buy the sweatshirt that he’d preferred buying it for her than for himself. He had tons of clothes, anyway. And seeing the girl’s smile once more would brighten his day. So he had given up on the sweatshirt willingly. He wanted nothing back, except maybe…

“Well… could you tell me your name? That would be your way to pay me back.” Jun added, smiling nicely.

If the girl was surprised by that request, she did not show anything.

“Ida. My name is Ida.”

“What an adorable name!” Jun thought.

“Can I know yours?” Ida asked shyly.

“Sure. I am Jun.”

“Yoroshiku onegaishimasu.” The girl said, holding out her arm in order to shake Jun’s hand. This latter caught it and shook it kindly.

“Yoroshiku ne.” he answered.

As soon as Jun had grabbed her hand, Ida felt that nothing was more important than holding is hand. She felt like both of them were linked forever and that this link was the most important thing in her life. Taken aback by those feelings spinning around in her head, Ida blinked to calm down a bit.

“Are you alright?” Jun asked in a worried voice.

“Y...yes.” the girl answered, letting go the man’s hand. “Err... Would you mind taking a cup of coffee?”

Seeing Jun’s bewildered expression, she hastened to explain her thoughts:

“That would be to pay you back for the sweatshirt… it is not much but it is the best I can do. Of course, I would totally understand if you refuse… You might be busy or something and we barely know each other…”

Jun didn’t think about it twice and “I don’t mind at all, let’s go!” was his answer.

Even if earlier this day, he had taken the decision to spend the day on his own, Jun had answered straight away to Ida’s suggestion. The girl’s presence made him feel at ease and relaxed, and that was exactly what he needed after those busy weeks.

“Do you have a place you want to go to?” Ida asked.

“I know a good tearoom not far away from here. Would it be okay for you?”

“Yes, sure. Anything is fine.”

***

After walking for about five minutes, they arrived in front of a medium building. It didn’t look particularly good and Ida pulled a face at its sight.

Jun caught her doing it so he tried to reassure her: “Don’t worry. The building doesn’t look nice but the tearoom is.”

Saying that, he led her inside.

Jun had actually picked that place because he knew there weren’t big chances that someone recognised him. It wasn’t a popular place and only regulars knew it. Besides, it was much cosy, so if by misfortune somebody spotted him, it would be only for a few seconds.

Indeed, the tearoom was made of many alcoves with only one table in each. So everything should be okay.

Ida had followed Jun, not knowing where he was taking her. She had tried her best to memorize the way, in order to be able to go back to the subway station. At first, she had been much disappointed by the building. But then, Jun had taken her inside and she had been very surprised. The place looked exactly like a tearoom from the Victorian era. Ida couldn’t believe her eyes. Did something like that could exist in real life?

A waitress, dressed as a maid, came and took them to an alcove where there was a table for two. After taking their orders, she went out and drew the curtains behind her. The atmosphere then became really intimist, as both of them were very close from each other.

Ida didn’t really feel at ease. She wasn’t used to that kind of place. She could hear her heart beating, and kept wondering if the man could hear it too.

Jun actually felt the girl uneasiness. He could see her glancing around and her face sometimes was blushing or whitening with no particular reason.

“Did I make the right choice?” he wondered. “She is obviously not used to that kind of atmosphere. Well, it is more like a date atmosphere than anything else…What was I thinking when I picked that place?”

But deep-down, Jun did not regret his choice at all. The more he was with this girl, the more he felt attracted to her. He thought she was very cute, the way he liked it. At the same time, she seemed a bit shy too and Jun thought it could be fun to play with her on that point. Not that he wanted to hurt her or anything, no! But he loved the way she blushed when embarrassed. It made her being even cutter.

“Am I falling for her? I don’t know anything about her except her name. And it’s been only one hour since we met…”

In the meanwhile, Ida discreetly observed the man in front of her. He looked very much like idols she could see on ads and on TV music programs. He had the same kind of smile. She felt both really shy and really happy to be so close to him. It made her feel like she was a privileged person, even if she didn’t really know why.

In the end, Jun broke up the silence:

“So, what do you do in life?”

“I actually study at Waseda University.”

“Really? Sugoi! You must be very smart then.”

Ida couldn’t prevent herself from blushing hard at hearing that.

“No, not really. I just try to work hard and to do my best.”

“Hum~” Jun answered, nodding. “But I really admire you! I had difficulties to graduate from high school, you see. So university was out of the question…”

“As long as you feel okay with that, you should not be ashamed.” Ida said, smiling.

At hearing those words, Jun felt his heart beating faster. “Calm down, calm down…” he thought deeply.

Then the waitress came back with their orders.

“Do I have to pay right now?” Ida asked her.

“I’ll be back in two minutes to cash.” Was the waitress’ answer, as she put down the bill on the table and took her leave.

Ida reached out her bag, opened it and stared at it, wide-eyed.

“Oh, for god’s sake, no!” she thought. “What’s the matter with me today??”

“Is anything wrong?” Jun inquired, seeing Ida’s face whitening.

“I am so so sorry…” this latter replied, on the edge of crying. “I forgot my purse at home… Therefore, I have no money at all… and I cannot pay for those” she added, pointing at the beverages on the table.

Feeling the girl’s distress, Jun got up, took his chair with him and sat down at Ida’s side.

“Daijoubu~” he said, patting her on the shoulder. “That can happen to everyone.”

Ida sniffed “I know, but still… It makes me feel bad. I was supposed to offer you this to pay you back for the present you gave me.” as she was looking down, not brave enough to look at the man.

“I’ll pay for them, so don’t worry about that.”

But seeing the girl’s eyes filling up with tears, Jun quickly added: “You can pay me back in another way!”

“Really?” Ida implored.

“Of course!”

“But, how?”

“You can…well, if you give me a kiss I’ll consider you paid me back.”

Hearing this, Ida quickly raised her head and stared at Jun’s face, bewildered, her eyes wide-opened.

"No pressure, of course!” the man added, fearing that he had scared her. “We can find another mean if you are not okay with this one.”

Since Ida didn’t answer for a few minutes, Jun had lost hope. That thought of her kissing him had come up from nowhere. However, since he had expressed it at loud, now he really wanted to do it.

“Okay.”

“Okay, what?” Jun asked, taken by surprised.

“I agree with kissing you.” Ida kept going “But only on the cheek.”

“That sounds fair.”

Ida wiped her eyes and looked at Jun. Her eyes were shinning because of the tears and her cheeks had turned pink.

She then leant forward Jun and kiss his right cheek. “Her lips are so soft!” Jun thought.

As she was straightening up, the man caught her lips with his. Ida shivered at this, but did not break the contact. Jun came closer to her and put his right arm behind her back, while he was caressing her hair with his left hand.

He then broke up the kiss softly and asked: “Are you alright?”

Ida nodded but couldn’t prevent a tear from running on her cheek. Jun tenderly wiped it with thumb, smiling. He then bent down to claim her lips once again in a passionate kiss as he took her in his arms.

THE END
