Gay for God?

I was stuck in a hotel room with very little to do and I was channel surfing in attempts to find the weather channel. Since, I could not find it I left to get breakfast down the hall. Upon returning to my room there was a commercial advertising a new TV series.

Scenario: Middle aged man standing in a bar in front of a pool table holding a beer. He is talking to a group of people who were fixed on him. He begins his speech to this group, I am in love. I am in love with a man. That man is God. Yes, I am gay for God.

Of course this did not sit will with me. God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are a triune which means they are one in the same. Lets look at this passage and break it down to prove that men that love God are not gay.

John 21:11-17

11 Simon Peter climbed aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." None of the disciples dared ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.

15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?"

"Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you."

Jesus said, "Feed my lambs."

16 Again Jesus said, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me?"

He answered, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you."

Jesus said, "Take care of my sheep."

17 The third time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?"

Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" He said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you."

Now lets break it down. The word love is used in this passage several times. But there are two different types of the word love. Unfortunately in the English language one word does not really explain the true meaning of certain Greek words.

When Jesus asks, Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these? The first two times he asks Simon, Jesus used the word agape. Agape has several meanings. It is being high esteemed, high regard, dear, and favorite. It also is the word that describes the love that God has for his Son, toward the human race, toward believers, and non-believers. This is the love that compels Christians to be obedient to Christ. This love is also known as the perfect (or sinless) love because of how it is described in 1 Corinthians 13. (See below for this passage.)

The love that Simon is using is the Greek word phileo. Phileo is an ardent affection and feeling, a type of impulsive love, to befriend, to welcome, and to act kindly towards. It is also known as brotherly love.

None of these words deal with an attraction of being other than brotherly or having high regard for someone. The word meaning love as in a affection or attraction for a spouse or significant other is not used in this passage nor is it used in any sense as a human loving God, Christ or the Holy Spirit. Therefore, when a man loves God, he is not gay because of the type of love that is given toward God. So kids, do not believe everything on television.

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7
