Good Bye, Green Rabbit . . .

Sep 04, 2008 16:30

So, this morning I got the call that I've been waiting for, from Mermaiden telling me her father has finally passed on. He's had Alzheimers for many years, and has been in hospice now for over a year, so, in a way, I've already been missing him.
And I can explain the rabbit thing. See, Mermaiden and I met back when she was 10 and I was 11--our families went to the same church (still do!), and we used to ditch out of Sunday School together, sneak off into the woods behind the church, and talk about Star Wars, and anime (not that they called it anime in those days, it was just "those cartoons from Japan where everyone's mouth is real big") and comic books. Sometimes I used to spend the weekend with her family at this  place they had in Gloucester, and we'd read Star Wars comics in the truck on the way up. One of the recurring characters in the earlier Star Wars comics was a man-sized, meat-eating green space rabbit smuggler friend of Han's. I think his name was Jackson. Audrey's Dad thought the giant rabbit was hysterical. He used to tease us about him, and say "rabbit, rabbit!" everytime I saw him at church. Anyway, that's the green rabbit connection.
Anyway, thanks for letting me ramble folks. I'd better log off--thinking about green rabbits now almost makes me cry. Audrey's Dad was cool.
