There was an interesting discussion on someon elses LJ on what is or is not a date and how to define such. I have come up wtih a definition I am happy with and thought I would post it here.
A date is an engagement where two people are present and both available to date each other, and one or both are there explicitly to see the other person. If only one person is interested then, the responsibility to make intentions clear lies with the invitor.
A date can be with only two people, or multiple people present but I think my definition stands pretty well on its own. The way you ask someone out can make it clear that it is not a date but it should probly be VERY clear or it is still a date, it is even possible that if it is made very clear that the act of clarifying so explicitly is in fact just a cover for it actually being a date (without saying that it is)
