I wrote a straightforward account of my Milan experiences on Monday only to delete it by mistake. Instead of writing it over (which seems unbearably tedious) I am giving a short summary: I saw the Duomo, the Castello Sforzesco, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and the Pinacoteca di Brera. They were all lovely. I shopped in the Quadrilatero d'Oro (Prada, Dolce and Gabbana, Chloe, Marni, Fendi, Armani) and at the big street market. I bought a handmade designer silk slip-dress that is a tad slutty but when paired with opaque tights, boots, and a fur wrap will be so very haute Italian fashion. The Duomo was one of the most impressive churches I've ever seen, the Castello was everything you would expect from an Italian fortress (tapestries, frescos, gardens), and the Brera made me rethink my utter boredom with Renaissance art (I blame my parents for taking me to the Prado really young). I saw the Alps from the roof of the Duomo. I said 'ciao' without feeling like an idiot (even though *everyone* in Europe uses that damned word).
Countless people warned me of the perils of Italy, especially as a girl travelling alone, but I had no problem. My hotel room was splendid with vaulted ceilings, and a marble bathroom (and free cappuccino and champagne for breakfast!!!). I found the Milanese to be remarkably friendly. I was hit on constantly, but the Italians aren't horribly persistent. I would say (politely but insistently) that no, I don't want to have sex with you in the restaurant bathroom/Prada dressing room/Armani "casa" section and that was enough. Food is terribly expensive, but the quality of the food is spectacular. I ate (and drank) so well that reacclimating to the Bratislava food scene has been a challenge.... I am just going to drift off thinking about Cabernet, and penne with saffron cream, and white truffle gelato....
Anyway, I'm going to Tesco after work to purchase dangerous alcoholic beverages to sneak through customs. 2 days left in Bratislava!
