A little bit I wrote out of sheer boredom and the need to write.

The first day of school, she noticed him. The boy who made her blush like a silly schoolgirl with a new crush. The hallway was all chatter and the sound of footsteps traipsing their way back into a familiar routine. A crowd gathered outside the door of room 216 as students enjoyed reconnecting with friends after two long months of summer. She checked her cell phone again. Fifteen minutes until the first bell.

Friends came and went, chatting for a few moments before passing on to hug and squeal over the next friend they “haven’t seen in forever!” A glimpse caught the corner of her eye. The boy was talking to a girl. Not tall, with long, gleaming curly blonde hair. She focused her eyes back on to Jill, quickly approaching to ask about her schedule. Even though a minute’s long conversation with chatty Jill, movement grasped her attention out of the corner of her eye. The boy was obviously flirting with the girl.

Checking her cell phone again, there were only 6 minutes left until the first bell. Classroom still locked, there was no escape without drawing attention to herself. She stood, leaning against a locker, appearing to be nonchalantly observing the hallway as it slowly emptied. Freshmen clung to their maps of the school, while upper classmen merely glanced up at room numbers. The blonde girl as giggling now, and the boy smiling that stupid smile that once made her blush.

Finally, the bell. The teacher opened the door and the students shuffled into the room, clearly wishing to still be sleeping. She took a seat in the middle of a row, two seats away from the door. She carefully took out her notebook and a pen, watching her other classmates file in. The boy gave her a little smile as he passed and she smiled back, weakly. He means nothing, he means nothing, she repeated the mantra in her head. She knew she shouldn’t-couldn’t go back to letting stupid smiles make her giggle and blush after being hurt again. She’d look for a better guy, one who would truly like her.

She turned her head to observe the classroom as the class settled into their desks. She saw the blonde girl glancing sidelong at the boy, and she clearly recognized the same look of longing hopefulness that has once adorned her face. As though she couldn’t tear her eyes away from the scene, she watched as the boy turned his head in the blonde girl’s direction; he instantly noticed the blonde’s eyes watching him and the girl blushed instantly and dropped her eyes, a small smile creeping into the reddened face. The boy gave an easy smile, instantly recognizing the girl’s symptons; it was the very same smile he had once give her. She turned her head purposefully toward the board and ignored the slight tightening in her heart.
