Efren G. PeÑaflorida, Jr. A Modern Day Young Filipino Hero
Ef is a fun-loving friend but a serious leader, a very responsible son according to his parents. Obviously, he has an optimistic view of life. According to classmates and teachers he never cheats in school examinations, quizzes and assignments. He values honesty, integrity, courage and his faith in God.
It shows in his principles, his activities and his priorities. As an adviser to the youth of Dynamic Teen Company, he literally practices what he preaches with no exceptions whatsoever. As an adviser and mentor to these teens, it doesn’t bother him if he is the one who cooks for them, the one who prepares the tables and chairs on some occasions or the almost regular photographer of most of DTC’s activities.
Ef started a youth group way back in high school which aimed of diverting students’ interest from joining fraternities and gangs into making a difference at home, in school and community and do their best to excel in studies and in everything they do. He named this group Dynamic Teen Company (Making A Difference) in 1997 and he remained as its adviser until the present. DTC is now into youth development and empowerment by training campus leaders to become responsible, systematic and principled. He regularly volunteers to speak in annual seminars and trainings conducted by the group.
The major issue Ef tries to address today is the proliferation of juvenile delinquency cases which also includes moral issues on youth and the values education of today’s youth. Most of his voluntary works and commitments are into helping alleviate the involvement to today’s youth in crimes either as victims or much worse, perpetrators. He tries to address them by the principle of prevention, thus involving himself in youth-cause oriented programs and organizations which help them.
Kuya Ef is an everyday hero for most of his kids in DTC and the children laborers and street kids because despite of his lack of finances, he is such a giver and a sharer of his blessings to them. The neighborhood bakery is where he buys biscuits and bread for the kids with his fifty or twenty pesos in pocket. Even in high school he has helped counsel schoolmates, like how he skipped some subjects in school just to convince a suicidal teen to abort his suicidal attempt at home.
Up to now, more parents are grateful to him for assisting their children to quit vices and go back to regular schooling. A fraternity kid was convinced to discontinue his membership and was given counsel and protection. Even in high school, Ef stood up against an abusive teacher and brought his complaint to the City Schools Division Superintendent to protect his classmates.
Presently, he has been an advocate of the kids living in streets and the garbage kids of the city. They look up to him because he is not only their friend but their teacher and mentor and probably a family.
