another 5.5 weeks

Back in March I mentioned the third week starting and I wanted to get off the roller coaster. When I get this four page term paper done, then I will be able to get off the roller coaster. The part I'm realizing is that the end of the week class is crammed with most assignments due on the weekend. Since this is only my second class and my first end of the week class, I can only speculate this is why it's been a challenge to get everything done without stress. I talked to my advisor who said since this is a fourth quarter class it's one of the more challenging classes. I came it basically around the fourth quarter with all the transfer credits so I experienced it a little earlier than fourth quarter. I've spent most of the weekend doing the current assignments and writing the term paper Art as a Politial Statement.

What I have enjoyed are the studio assignments. We were to photograph or sketch a piece within the time period we were studying and explain what influenced our piece.

This piece represents Realism, which started mid-nineteenth century often depicting everyday people doing every day things. I manipulated a digital photo removing the color and applying a charcoal filter to give it a sketched look.

This piece represents Post-Impressionism, which showed more structure and concern for expression than did Impressionism. This is a waterfall manipulated in Photoshop bringing up the color contrast and applying a dry brush filter to give it a painted look bringing out the pure color and taking away the detail.

Jumping into the early 20th century with one of the most influential art movements; Cubism. Cubism can be described where matter is broken up, analyzed, and reassembled in abstract form. I used icons familiar to me from my job.

And finally, a De Stijl (The Style) piece where abstraction is broken down even further into a simplistic form using rectangles or other geometric shapes, where color is either primary color or black and white.

With all the periods I studied, there were a few pieces in each I didn't like or understand. We actually had to go on a web field trip each week to a museum or art site and explain pieces we liked and didn't like. I gained a better appreciation for Munch who painted the famous "The Scream"(originally titled "Dispair"). I didn't like Picasso as much as I thought but liked Dali more than I thought.
