If you saw the following label in a department store, what would you expect to find on the hanger?
- One set of pajama pants
- Two sets of pajama pants
I was confused when I picked it up to check the price and saw two pairs of pajama pants hanging from the clips. Thinking it might have been a mistake, I checked other similar hangers, but they all had two pairs of pajama pants on them.
An employee happened to be just down the aisle from me, straightening up another display. I asked her if there was a problem, and she followed me back to the rest of them and looked at me quizzically. "These hangers all have a pair of pants on them," she insisted, holding up a couple hangers. I pointed out that they each, in fact, had two pairs of pants on them. She tilted her head off to one side and replied, "No, I see one pair. One, two pants. That's a pair."
Silly me. I'm so used to referring to a single set of pants as a pair that it didn't even occur to me that it could be any other way. (I'd mention at this point that I don't think English was her first language, which may have helped clear up the confusion for her, but then I feel a bit like an ass for bringing it up.)
On the receipt they rang up as "JCP 2FOR1 SLEEP PANT", and
tekman points out that maybe they were doing something funky for the clearance sale they have going on right now. Looking at that hanger label still breaks my mind.
