Was it really only a month ago that lying bothered him so much?
He remembers feeling tortured on some level whenever he told his father that he was going to the library to study for a few minutes. He remembers twitching a bit when he told his school friends that the bruise was from a run-in with someone else's bike. He remembers clenching his fist when he faked those sports tryouts, pretending not to be good enough.
And yet, when Cassie asks him if they're okay, he easily lies and tells her "Yes."
Yes, they're okay.
No, he's not jealous.
Congratulations, Wonder Girl, you are now leader of Young Justice.
When did honesty become so hard anyway?
Its a lesson in humility when he unlocks the cuffs holding Ray and Slo-bo together, but it's an even greater one when the votes are all counted, and he tucks them away in his utility belt. It's a reminder that he did rather, well, petty things for a competition that he didn't win. Slo-bow wants to frag him, of course, but they're all still dripping wet and the guy would rather dry off first. Ray, well, Ray is also a little too shame-faced for male posturing right now. They've all made fools of themselves today. Even Cassie. They'll probably look back on this one day and laugh, but at the moment, they would all rather focus on the next villain du jour.
It's barely a day after Fite's funeral when Cassie really makes use of that "take charge" tempo she's added to her step. She looks different too. Change of costume. It's really, really odd that a turtle-neck is all it takes to make her look... older. More mature. But isn't the devil always in the details? Same holds true for Robin, certainly. A mask is one thing, but it's the starlight lenses that really fix the mystery in place. Cassie's catching on to the importance of little items no one notices.
How much of that did she learn by watching him?
Imitation is--sometimes--the sincerest form of flattery. And when she asks him if they're okay, he can tell that she really does worry. She wants them to be okay.
He watches her on the flight to Zandia. She's putting power and authority in every single thing she does. She has to. Can't let the sharks smell blood.
And when they're alone, and she asks him if leaders might possibly hug... how can he not? He's been there, and she's finally starting to understand what it's like.
The ship lands, and it's hard to maintain your dignity in a group fight on muddy soil. Still, she tries and so does he. He can tell that she's trying to be seen as she fights. Be the leader, inspire morale. Put up a decent--
Then the light hits, and he's not thinking of her. He's wondering how in blazes he's going to explain a sunburn that leaves a perfect domino mask silhouette on his face when he gets back to Gotham. So what if it was his idea? That doesn't help if you don't actually think to cover your whole face... Ray's execution of the plan was fast. Speed of light fast. Make a note of it.
It takes him a while to figure it out. They don't need him to lead, but they still need him. They still need Rob. Wonder Girl especially. To fight, to support, to be.
It takes a while, but she inevitably asks again.
This time, when she inquires as to whether they're okay, he tells her "Yes." again.
And this time it's no lie.
