Whee! Finally another Challenger post. I've decided I'm probably gonna make a thing of this, and always encourage you F-listers to check out the scans. Previous posts from now on can be found by clicking the challs scans tag. I guess one thing that gets me motivated is Brave & the Bold. It didn't have too much challenger stuff in it this month, but it was still pretty darn good and put me strolling back down nostalgia lane. Anyway...
Last time, in issue #63, teen singing sensation Tino Manary was attacked by a mummy man, blinded by a mystic ruby, carefully operated upon using 60's!science, restored the use of one eyeball via his bro Red, and kidnapped by the evil Legion of the Weird. Enter the Challengers for the win! rescue.
Here we have the continuing issue cover, a wonderful 60's "boy hostage" piece. Some of you may be thinking "Okay, why did they wait three issues to continue with this story?" I have no idea. I actually don't own the in-between issues, so I can't tell you what crap got in the way of rescuing Tino. It better have been important, s'all I can say...
Using Red and Tino's eye-link, they rough-land just outside of the Legion of Weird's headquarters...
The group's made up of a lot of strange guys...a vampire, a druid, a witch doctor...etc.
Throughout different issues, Tino's eye-patch switches from left to right and vice versa. I guess nobody made a stink about such things back then...
Is it just me or does their attack bear a strange resemblance to a group hug?
Trust Prof to always have some cobbled-together doohicky that precisely suits the situation... I can just picture Bruce Wayne commissioning this guy to come up with bat-shark-repelant.
Mummy man is confused. That brain-crack ain't as %100 as it ought to be. Afterwards, the Legion is confronted by a dark-robed stranger who claims to be the powerful avatar of Om, the dark god that he Weird folk worship.
I'd be sniffling, but I think we both know the likelihood of one such as Prof really biting the bullet...
Sadly, that mummy man really isn't all that evil. He just has a way wicked boss...
Yay, Prof! I like Kaftu's death, also. The Challs aren't the bat-clan or like the other modern DCU heroes. They may not be out to kill anyone, but they aren't gonna break their own bones to save the bad guys from each other. It really simplifies things sometimes. Simplicity can be good.
That right there is the scariest part of all. This Om dude is real. Till that point, we were at least allowed to convince ourselves the Weird guys were all a bunch of crazies...
Awww...Red and Tino together again! But don't think this is really the last of their mystical eye-connection. There's at least one other occasion in which the Challs are in trouble, Tino's able to help them because he notes what he sees in his link with Red. I kinda like that they ended up bringing that back. But anyways, until next time, boys and girls!
