Joe Kelly and Ale Garza totally rock my socks off now.

Ish. #17 was just...wow...everything I love about Supergirl. Yes, I know Kara is supposed to be a stupid super-torso that no one in her right mind would like, but I don't have to admire her to be entertained by her title. I actually like this addle-patted "kill Kal-El" storyline. But yeah, this issue was all that is right with OYL. (I know a lot of folks think that ain't much, but I really like it.) The story, the art, the guest stars...Good Heaven the guest stars...

"You stupid cow...Wonder Woman's lasso makes you tell the truth. Mine just hurts people."

I love you, Cassie...

"Don't think that just because he throws you some cash and lets you play on his computer that he likes you. He knows you're dangerous. He can smell it on you. You're like a dog to him. And when you snap, he'll be the first in line to put you down."

...but I love Tim more.

I adore the confirmation of relationships here. We've seen Cassie and Kara hang together, but here they actually refer to themselves as best friends. We've seen Tim act snippy towards Kara, but here we get a clear statement of his anger and jealousy. We've seen Kara be imature and selfish before, but here it is made know that she is aware of her stupidity. And her love for Kal and her determination to find another way....(Silly Kara, didn't the whole fight with Robin show you that you only need to nick Kal with the sharp pointy thing to get rid of the "demons"?)

And at the end...Pre-crisis Kara! I know it won't happen, but I can totally picture Pre-IC Kara flying in and going "Supergirl? What? You're not Linda! Where's Linda?"...and totally acknowledging all the beautiful Peter David "Many Happy Returns" love to which I've recently been introduced.

And last but not least, the art! I liked Ian Churchil's stuff (though I wasn't unaware of the problems with it), but Ale! I think the man's got a new fan in me. Her body is still comic-proportion-perfect, but her face and hair look genuinely young, almost childlike at some points, and it feels totally so totally right for all the stuff she's going through. Teen dealing with Daddy issues. If that's not youth, what is? I also loved the detail he gave to her costume with the rhine-stud belt and barely off-shoulder cape. Cassie and Tim were completely stellar.

There were just a few things that niggled at my brain...I wish that Kara, Cassie and Tim could have all shared a page at some point. I want a trio shot, an icon opportunity of some sort. Ah well.

The other thing was the "all-concealing-shadows" people in the bottom panel near the end. They gave me the feeling that the whole issue may have just been an orchestrated scenario inside Kara's head. That would be rather sad, since I find this story too cool to be a hoax or imaginary tale.

Anyway, on the more artistic side of things, I was spurred on to icons. Simple-style, all from Supergirl #17. So...a few spoilers, though not too much. Comment, Edit at will, Credit & Enjoy! ^_^
