"My wings will protect me," was a perfectly valid, succinct, and reassuring statement.

So what if he'd said it before? He would say it again and again if need be, so that she didn't have to fret about him as well as her own self in the middle of a N.O.W.H.E.R.E. skirmish.

There was absolutely no need for her to roll her eyes at it.

"I'm supposed to take you seriously, then?"

Tim kind of wished she wouldn't do that. That mocking thing in the middle of punching out secret agents.

"You never did answer my question: what does being home-schooled have to do with anything?"

But she only shook her head and punched the agents' getaway vehicle off the cliff. And made a little grunting sound as she put her weight into it. A rather nice grunting sound, actually.

His mind balanced that grunting sound along with the thirteen and a half minutes they had left to scurry away to one of his secret bunkers before the rest of the agents caught up to them. It was as good a time as any to review the access codes in his head, and try to distract himself from the easy way Cassie wiped her hands on her jeans, like she'd just finished doing yard-work instead of bashing heads. A rather magnificent gesture, actually.

"You really wanna know?"

"Sorry?"

She rolled her eyes again. Oh! The question, right... "Yes. Yes, I do."

"I don't suppose the phrase 'overly and ridiculously cheezy' means anything to you, does it?"

"I don't think I understand the question."

"Oh, of course you don't. God... I bet that if I'd had just an inch of space to breathe since we hit the road, I could have called your every move. Y'know, once I was absolutely sure you were for real."

Well he had filed her under "brilliant," among the people he'd hoped to recruit. And he had a certain methodology. It was possible. Technically.

"Lemme guess. The first time you ever went up against these bozos, you made them come to you, and you hid some bomb with a ten-second timer as your counter-strike. Just so you could gloat and yack about justice before jumping out the window and flapping away."

It was a twenty-second timer. He would never be so reckless. And it wasn't gloating. He did not gloat. Ever.

Well, maybe a little.

"Hell, you presented me with an important life decision and then genuinely asked me to take your hand."

"You still reached for me, I noticed."

As as much as he managed to calculate the events of the day, the kiss that came next had no part in the plan. A welcome deviation, actually.

There was every bit as much strength behind it as he had fantasized--the grip of her arms as they yanked him in by the belt, the feel of her heavy gauntlet braced at his neck, and the subtle spark of her lariat...mmm... resting on her hip and brushing against his.

It was perfect. So much so, that it even moved him to confession...

"I've been wanting to do that for the last three months."

Cassie frowned.

"We only just met two weeks ago, Red."

"..."

Oops. Yeah. His habit of long-time observance didn't always go over entirely well with others.

As he watched a dawning look of fury and suspicion settle over her features for the twenty-fifth time that day, Tim wondered briefly if there was some way he could blame this on being home-schooled.
