Been watching Camelot. Episode #3.
The delectable Jamie Campbell Bower is playing Arthur, and normally, my shallow hormones would have me quite thrilled at the idea of a rather illicit Arthur/Guinevere romance, but instead...
I just feel a great swell of pity and frustration for every other character in the story who has to put up with Arthur's BS.
Hmmm... let's see, we're in the Dark Ages, a time when bad things happen to women who are caught sleeping with men who aren't their husbands. Things like surprise pregnancy, social disgrace, along with the occasional death and beating... and you, Arthur, are wondering why this woman is hesitant to jump into bed (or sand) with you the day before her wedding and why she's crying and scared considering she hardly knows anything about you save an off-the-wall attraction and that she saw you once in a freaky dream?
Hmm.... I don't know how to explain this to you, Arthur. I really don't.
Why don't you just go memorize some more of those moving and esoteric sayings about kingship and leaderliness that Merlin assigned you. Y'know...the ones you clearly don't understand?
...
Now... to be fair... he hasn't been raised as a king. But if he just stopped to think just a little, he could probably give a slightly shrewder answer regarding his plans for Camelot. And just a sliver of responsibility would be all that's required to consider the consequences of an affair with Guinevere. If they'd had a long period of UST, considered the consequences heavily, and had a host of reasons of why they really couldn't stop the wedding, thenI could buy this as some sort of tragic romance. As it is? He just comes off as a jerk. And she comes off as a pushover.
And yet... I kind of enjoy watching Arthur make puppy eyes in the desire for Morgan's approval. And how she totally sucks it up like shark about to devour a lil' fishie.
And Merlin just exudes coolness.
Kay... crap regarding Arthur is gonna hit the fan so soon, and again, I'm back to just feeling sorry for Kay because he is related to Arthur. Same with Igraine. I think this is gonna become a pattern. Gawaine... I like him...
... and again, I just feel sorry for him because he's about to meet Arthur, and that's just a sure sign that he's about to be screwed over.
I figured I probably wouldn't enjoy this show as much as BBC's Merlin, but I thought that it would at least be fun to see an Athurian show with a little more realism. Instead, I just wanna hit more people.
Figures.
