Perception of Normal Societal Expectation

Aug 10, 2010 11:10

Okay, perhaps I'm opening a can of worms by bringing up feminism/politics again, but I'm curious...

A lot of militant feminists state that society expects them to eventually get married and have children and that this expectation annoys them to no end. When they say this, they always seem to imply that this isn't expected of men. Is that true? Perhaps I merely grew up in a strange environment, but as far as I can tell, while this is somewhat expected of girls around me, it's also expected of guys. It is assumed that they will eventually find a nice girl, get married, and help provide for their families. Career, marriage, and children--in that order--is expected of both sexes in my environment (though of these, "career" is the most important for both genders). Is this... just not true in other places?

Personal opinions/experiences/thoughts, guys?
