Five canon events that would cause you to leave a fandom (or at least think seriously about it).
1. One of them is already about to happen. DC plans on canceling Robin. Between this, and the rumor that they are gonna drop Tim from the Titans team, I just might have to give up on DC canon for the next couple years. If they have enough of my favorite character in other titles (Maybe have him, Dick, and Jason take over the Bat-titles while Bruce is in therapy?) I'll probably stick around. But if DC doesn't give me any Tim... they are getting considerably less of my money.
2. In my Star Wars EU fandom, they killed my favorite character. Jacen is gone, and so I admit that my interest in SW fandom has majorly diminished. I didn't buy the next book. I thought, maybe my love for my 2nd favorite character, Ben, would get me to buy the next tome, but it didn't.
3. Lack of fandom. I have a lot of things I love from Amethyst, to Challengers of the Unknown, to Hocus Pocus, to a few miscellaneous manga/anime things, but I often leave these loves for a time simply because there's no one to share in the joy.
3.5 Cannon just gets too many new characters and the feel of the title completely changes (in case 3.0 doesn't fit the standards of the question). I couldn't really get back into X-men after leaving because of this, and it's why I'm careful with Aladdin fanfic because it often ends up referencing the TV show with which I have no experience. Also, similar deal with Stargate SG-1.
4. Making the characters I love boring. I put my trust in Chris Claremont and he let me down regarding my beloved Rogue and Remy. I just couldn't stand the tail-end of X-treme X-men, and considering that horrible story-lines and art had already taken over the other X-titles, it was the only one left that I was reading at all.
5. Too much of a bad thing. Like Lana Lang. Or Judd Winnick.
