What about picking up a short story collection, maybe a "year's best" type anthology? You'd be exposed to a wide variety of voices without having to make a long commitment. I'll bet your library's got a good selection.

OK my all time fave author is Elizabeth Moon. The Paksenarion Trilogy. I love her characters. She deals in the realm of Fantasy for this series but it is different. And she doesn't hesitate to put her characters into tough/awful situations. But wow how I love those characters. Man oh man.

Since I frequently troll my library's what's on order page... I ran across this book. I did put a hold on it. I dunno nada about the author except good reviews, You might want to look her up!
