Off to a crummy start.

Ugh. What do you have to do to get a decent cup of coffee around here? I grumbled as I threw the second half of my latte into the nearest trashcan, making my way across Wolfram & Hart's lobby. A sub-par cup of coffee just meant that the morning was off to a bad start. Bad coffee is a bad omen ( Read more... )

Well, a liaison dragging me somewhere? That was certanly a bad omen.

"What's going on?"

If she was going to take me somewhere, I'd rather be prepared. Common sense, after all. When a liaison wanted you, it had to be something big, and big often meant certain death if you failed.

"We're going to go have a chat with Mr. McDonald, actually. I thought it might save some time if you were there. I know you don't have anywhere else to be until noon, so don't try to tell me otherwise. I promise, it'll be painless."I hope I wasn't interrupting anything too important."

I grinned at her, "Nothing important. Normal lab stuff, you know? I needed that person to work on one of the projects today. D'you have some business with the lab?"

Probably not. I was just trying to get information. You know, being sneaky?

"Indirectly," I told him, motioning for him to join me in the elevator as the doors open. The doors slid closed again and I pressed the button for Lindsey's floor before leaning back against the handrail and looking to Knox himself. "It's more like I have business with you. Well, not just me. You'll hear more about it when we get there, I promise. No need to worry. It's nothing too horrible." I smirked at that, glancing up at the dimly-lit numbers above the door and waiting for the elevator to slow to a stop.

"So. What exactly is 'normal lab stuff'? Out of curiosity, I mean."

The funny thing about adjectives? They were all relative. One person could think that something 'horrible' was a simple bee-sting, and the next would think the loss of a limb constituted a 'horrible' event.

Knowing this sort of information made the liaison's words considerably less comforting.

"Normal lab stuff? Pretty much whatever we're contracted to do by the firm or its clients." Not to mention whatever I felt like cooking up in my spare time. "We make everything from viruses, antidotes, mystical weaponry, to cures for the common cold."

Which we had cooked up, just last week.

"Sounds interesting. You don't mind if I come and have a look for myself sometime, do you?" The elevator doors slid open again and we stepped out onto Lindsey's floor. I started off at a quick pace and assumed Knox would follow behind me. It couldn't hurt to make a trip down to the lab and see what they were up to. After all, it's my job to stay on top of things now, isn't it? To know everything. Well. I was ready to do my homework, and since R&D has always been one of the busiest departments, it's a prime place to start.

"When is good for you?" I went on, not bothering to wait until he'd answered my first question.

Right, Higher-ups? Big on the non-verbal commands. No wonder we have such high standards at Wolfram and Hart, most employees that aren't quick enough to pick up on an order die pretty quickly.

And as for minding whether the liaison peeked around the lab? I did. That sort of thing made me nervous. I hadn't been back long, but if the lab was cleaned up quick enough...

It's fascinating how many scenarios end with an untimely death here.

"Anytime is good for me, just call on down and I should be there."

On second thought I never knew when something would go horrifically wrong. "How about tomorrow?"

"Anytime is good for me, just call on down and I should be there."

That's good, seeing as I'm unlikely to give him a warning before I come down. What's the point of visiting the department if they're just going to sweep everything under the rug before I get there?

"How about tomorrow?"He's giving himself time to prepare. Time to clean up any little messes he might have made down there before one of the big scary liaisons comes to call. That was fine. I didn't have time to get down to the lab today, at any rate, and this wouldn't be my only visit. The next one will be unannounced. This one? Perhaps it's something more of a formality ( ... )

This is bullshit. Absolute bullshit.

I want Hamilton gone, I don't care who I gotta talk to in order to make it happen. The son of a bitch is going. Terminated as soon as possible. He stole getting Illyria back from me, and it's going to make me look bad. And if it makes me look bad, you damn well know it's gonna make Lilah look bad, and I'm gonna be the first one to hear about it.

I hate this shit.

I heard the knock and looked up to see Samantha walking in with Knox in tow. Just the person I was looking for. "How in the hell do we get Hamilton's sorry ass out of this firm for good?" I stated bluntly, getting up from my chair. "He's fucking with things, and I don't like it."

I don't care if he fixed it. It's supposed to be done by us, or we get in the shit for it.

We'll just have to save the situation. And the fact that I'm goin' to have to work with Lilah on that one bugs the living hell out of me.
