Done in PSPx although its very translateable!
No need for a cut since this is easy. Its simple and your icon turns out stunning.
Crop your base.(I'm not really counting this as a step since everyone knows to do that first!lol).
1.Duplicate your base
2.Set the top layer to soft light 100%
3.Go to layers
4.new layer
5.hue/stauration/lightness
6.Set saturation to 55.
optional-play with the saturation.
See that was painless?! And now you have a shiny icon.
I'd love to see what you guys come up with. ^^
[Edit] I know why you guys have been getting green and purple images. Its because I said hue and not saturation. My mistake. You shouldn't get a green or purple image when saturation is set to 55. Remeber to play around with it.
