Pairing: Sakurai Sho/OC, Arashi/non-Johnny's females
Rating: PG
Genre: Realistic romance, friendship, family
Disclaimer: I don't own any of Arashi, or anything of Johnny's Entertainment. And sorry if I've misused any Japanese phrases.
Summary:
What can you do when you fall in love with someone that is out of your reach, someone as distant and brilliant as the stars? Can one dare to dream? Singer, dancer, actor, newscaster, model. Idol, to put it simply. But behind Sakurai Sho’s public image is a sincere, dorky, passionate man. Few people get to see a real glimpse of the person behind the lights, except for what he chooses to display.
Friends, sure, but love? That’s impossible, according to the intelligent, beautiful and humble Kaori, a medical school student who doesn’t realize how much she can accomplish. But maybe, just maybe, she’s exactly what Sakurai Sho needs.

[23/08/10 1:32am] You guys captured the real aspects of Romania well. Respectful, kind. I tried to convey that in my paper for school too. What part stuck out the most to you?
[23/08/10 1:51am] Ahno, I really need to get to sleep now, long day ahead tomorrow… I’ll talk to you some other time, gomen ne.

[26/08/10 6:13pm] Daijoubu ka? You’ve seemed really swamped lately.
…….
[29/08/10 11:56pm] Sorry, I had to go to Sendai for a couple of days, they didn’t let us have our phones on hand. Everything’s fine, didn’t mean to make you worry.
[29/08/10 11:57pm] Are you sure?
[30/08/10 12:01am] Yup.
[30/08/10 12:04am] Since you’re back, do you have time for lunch or dinner tomorrow? Or even breakfast? I can wake up extra early if you have to work all day.
In the battle between the head and the heart, there was no clear winner for Sakurai Sho. His firm reasoning and objectivity could not shake Kaori’s shape from the undeniable place in his chest. All her efforts pained him; why couldn’t she get the hint to just give up? Why did she… care so much? He just couldn’t let her go - but he didn’t want to put his heart on the line anymore.
[29/09/10 12:12am] Then let’s do breakfast this Thursday, 7:00am.
------
September’s breeze began to creep in and a prettily dressed Kaori rushed to the door of the small coffee shop when she saw Sho walk in. She pecked the inconspicuous man on the lips and he gave a worried smile from underneath his baseball cap.
“Don’t worry, no one’s here.” Kaori said cheerfully. “Just an ojii-chan and obaa-chan and the barista.”
The young people quietly sat down to their warm cups of coffee and pastries. An old couple sat in the other corner of the café holding hands as the grandpa read aloud that morning’s news articles to his wife. Between sips, Kaori eyed their intimacy wistfully. Across from her, dressed in a slouchy track suit, Sho ate his bagel silently and checked his phone non-stop. It was hard to believe that he had that much mail at such an early hour, but his mind already seemed distracted. That unsettling feeling in Kaori’s stomach resurfaced even though she tried to enjoy breakfast.
With the lull in new customers, the young, bored barista turned on the television mounted on the wall and flipped through channels - children’s morning cartoons, weather and traffic reports - until a gossip program caught her attention. She gasped and raised the volume a little, drawing Kaori’s eyes as well.
“Consistent evidence from numerous sources over the past few months have led to confident rumors within the Johnny’s Entertainment fandom that Arashi’s Sakurai Sho is indeed in a relationship.”
Kaori nearly spit out her coffee as blurry images of the two of them flashed on the large screen. Walking down a busy street, leaving a restaurant, through a shop window, getting into his blue car. Even with his disguises, Sho’s distinct features could not be mistaken. As for her, her eyes were always covered by her hood or hair to barely save her from exposure. She glanced at the three others in the café but none of them seemed to put the pieces together.
Sho winced. “You weren’t supposed to find out.”
“What, how could I not find out?!” Kaori hissed back. “You already knew?”
“I was told about an hour ago - by Johnny-san.”
-- “The earliest pictures date back to summer of 2009, during Arashi’s Kokuritsu concert series. None of our experts can identify the mysterious woman, suggesting that she is a non-celebrity. Some have compared her to actress Ishihara Satomi. This could be quite a big blow for Sakurai Sho-san’s near-impeccable image. As one of the top entertainers in Japan, many have always seen him as the perfect, unattainable idol…”
Her stomach sank. “Are - are you in trouble?”
“Not too much.” he muttered.
“What did you tell Johnny-san?”
“… I denied it. It was the easiest thing to do.”
-- “The elite Jimusho has been trying to dispel rumors, but the pictures speak for themselves. Passionate fans have been exploding all over the web, lashing out at this breach of idol taboo…”
They quickly paid for their meal and exited the establishment; Sho walked further ahead, hands stuffed in his pockets and shoulders incredibly hunched. Kaori followed a little at a distance like a guilty puppy.
“I - I’m really sorry!” she called out uncertainly. “This must be really troublesome for you.”
“It’s not your fault.” he replied gruffly.
“Maybe I should start wearing sunglasses too, or we could stay in more often-“
Sho swiftly turned around and grabbed her shoulders. “Don’t worry about it, okay? Majide, Kaori, good thing you aren’t in this business if you can’t handle a little gossip.”
The young woman stopped in her tracks with a dull ache in her chest and stared after the man who marched on angrily. Kaori bit her lip and walked in the opposite direction.
Somehow, Sho had unfairly expected her to handle this scandal just like any of her emergencies - with optimism and a mocking confidence - but now she was acting so helpless. It infuriated him.

Going against Sho’s orders, Kaori searched “Sakurai Sho new girlfriend” and clicked the first link that came up. The fan forum indeed loaded page after page - harsh, critical commentary on Kaori’s clothing and body, jealousy, even disturbing ‘claims’ on Sho for their own. Some brought up past rumored relationships and Kaori wondered if those had any truth as well. She felt herself sinking under a building, invisible weight of contempt.
Later when Sho learned that she had perused the online forums, he yelled at her some more. “Why would you do that to yourself, why torture yourself? Those are just foul thoughts of obsessive girls half-way through puberty, looking for a target to unleash their insecurities on!”
Kaori stared at her feet.
“Come on Kaori, stop listening to all this nonsense! Why do you care what they think?!”
“Why do I care?” she snapped. “Because I’m worried about US, Sho! Because everyone seems to loathe us being together - and - and - maybe you’re starting to think that way too.”
He gaped. “Y-you knew what you were getting into! You’re the one backing down right now.”
“Do you think I could have possibly prepared myself for hatred from the whole nation’s female population?”
Sho pulled at his hair. “They don’t even know who you ARE, Kaori! I’M the one who has to deal with this!”
Suddenly Kaori’s pager rang loudly, rattling the electric air. They took deep breaths.
“I - I have to go to the hospital now.”
“I should go too.”
“Let’s talk about this later, okay?”
Sho merely shrugged.
“Well… bye, then.”
“Jya.”
-------------------------------
Angry Sho is pretty scary, hmm.
I started watching Papa wa Idol, a drama starring Nishikido Ryo as himself. It shows his "real life" and how he's struggling with keeping his marriage a secret. I died with the first episode. Even Sho himself said it was very accurate!!
