I don't want to analyze Dollhouse

Sep 26, 2009 01:04

I just want to enjoy it.  I want to experience it.  To breathe it.  It's similar to how I first watched Buffy.  I wasn't a part of fandom until after the show had ended even though I'd watched it from the first season on.  I love reading other people's in-depth thoughts, but I want to be the viewer.  I want to be taken into the world, to experience ( Read more... )

Same here.

(And I haven't seen today's episode yet, so please don't give any spoilers in reply...)

No spoilers! Promise.

I think I'm still in the discovery stage of being a fan. Dollhouse is still wooing me, ya know? It's all very exciting, but it's not at the level of my deep, abiding love for Buffy and Angel.

As I have mentioned previously, I don't seem to get truly excited about shows in a meta-writing way until there's a closed canon.

That was an interesting read! I like to analyze, not speculate, but it doesn't seem to matter whether canon is open or closed. My previous fandoms were in-progress ones, but I didn't engage much in speculation and preferred to talk about what had already happened. Yet my interest in the shows faded once the shows were over.

BtVS is the first "closed canon" fandom I've been involved in, and I've really enjoyed that experience of being able to analyze and write meta having the full text in front of me.

I do enjoy speculation on "mystery" type shows, like Veronica Mars and BSG, but that's mostly for the satisfaction of solving the mystery before the show gives me the answer.

For most shows - especially the layered, complicated ones - I like reading other people's thoughts and reactions, who pick up on things I might've missed, but don't really engage in speculation.

I'm not sure I really get beyond the Enjoy and experience part, but reading all that buffyverse meta really makes me think thinky thoughts. I am looking forward to watching Dollhouse tomorrow.

I feel that whatever show comes along, it'll never come to level of BtVS to me, no matter how awesome it is. I have the same suspicion. BtVS was very much the perfect storm for me; no fandom--and I've been part of a lot has ever won me so quickly or completely, and I'm pretty sure none ever will.

It's fun to just sit back and enjoy it. And yes, I don't really have the time to delve that deep. Not as deep as I can see myself going.

I'm sure you'll love the last half of S1!

Eh, I tend to do both at the same time. It's a habit studying literature's got me into, I think. Part of me enjoys the story and lets it tell me anything it wants to; the other part is flinging ideas around the place and seeing what sticks and bounces. Dollhouse is great for that.

Yeah, that's the way I was with Season 1 and to an extant I do analyze. But I'm mostly spending energy thinking about putting that level of thought into what I'm writing. I put so much energy into that, that it's nice to just relax and absorb the experience of the show. It's more like my first viewing is just to experience it. There'll be time to delve deeper later on. That's what DVDs are for.

Fair enough! For me I'm not sure it's something I can turn off... :/
