Feminist discussion on Whedonesque!

First off, I'm using this icon ironically because the discussion is actually quite nice and there's no outrage or kerfuffling.

Anyone interested should check it out or even join in.  It's about a linked article listing the 7 Greatest Actor-Director Collaborations in Sci-Fi and hey, guess what?  There are no ladies on the list.  Cue discussion about ( Read more... )

whedonesque, feminism

shadowcat also mentioned this and I have to say that, sadly, I'm mostly drawing a blank.

James Cameron has used Sigourney Weaver in Aliens and Avatar (And he used Linda Hamilton in both of his Terminators before it went on to other folks, but those are sequels and the same character so I don't know that it counts in the same way.)

Shadowcat did point out Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton. She's in his Alice, The Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Of course, she's also his signicant other.

Indeed. I think shadowkat caught the links to the discussion from this post. There's some interesting comments over on Whedonesque, too. I looked it up earlier and Helena Bonham Carter was also in Big Fish and Planet of the Apes, two more Burton films.

Basically, that list sucks. Way to make women even more invisible, Syfy. Fffffffffffffuuuuuuuuuu.

I still say David Lynch is the best example I can come up with right now. The guy uses the same actors and actresses over and over again in very different roles - hell, INLAND EMPIRE might as well have been titled Laura Dern Rocks, and that's 20 years after he first cast her in Blue Velvet.

But yeah, in sci-fi it's looking pretty grim. I'm honestly struggling to come up with actresses who have consistently (and successfully) stuck to the genre at all, let alone in some sort of continuous relationship with a director. There's Joss and Eliza and Summer, sure, but honestly that's not exactly blockbuster stuff...

Yeah, it's disappointing. Heh, Laura Dern does rock.

I mean, hey, I love my bromances. But how does Joss/Nathan rate more than Joss/Summer or Joss/Eliza? And how does Tim Burton/Helena Bonham Carter not feature at all? Travesty. For shame.

Preach. It's a bromance list that excludes women.
