A New Show to Love: The Wire

Feb 10, 2010 00:27

Okay, so I started watching The Wire (courtesy of tvshare woohoo!) after hearing crazy good recommendations of it (I can only recall shapinglight recommending it atm) and WOW.  This show is amazing.  I love how I just never know what's going to happen.  The drama is so intense and intricate.  The acting is stellar--this cast, oh this cast!

Flist, if you haven't watched this show, go watch.  It's stellar.  It delivers in ways that constantly surprise and gratify.

Just to give an example of the unpredictability of the story, back in Season 1 I so totally expected Kima to die when she got shot during an undercover job.  Probably Joss influencing me.  But what I loved was that yes, she got shot, but that wasn't the end-all-be-all of the drama.  She didn't need to die for me to be absolutely frickin' terrified that she was going to die.  I cried at the end of that episode.  It was so intense.  Sometimes I'll catch myself tensing in anticipation because I just have no idea what's going to happen.  I just finished watching Season 2 and during the final scene as Nico is walking by the docks I was just waiting for some guy to jump out and shoot him since he had turned in his former associates to the cops.  Yes, the bad guys had left town already, but I kept thinking "oh god he's gonna die, oh god."

That's what this show does.  Every moment feels so real.  And god, how much do I love Omar, the Robin Hood of the projects of Baltimore.  His scene in early Season 2 where he calls out the corrupt lawyer in court saying how yeah he might steal from drug dealers and it's messed up, but that's the game and how the lawyer is just like him for representing drug dealers.  He's just awesome.

And wow, I so wanted Ziggy to die during Season 2.  That piss-ant was annoying as shit (yeah, I hated him that much).
